25 February 1993 63d <strong>Fighter</strong> Squadron reassigned from <strong>56th</strong> <strong>Fighter</strong> <strong>Wing</strong> to<br />
58th <strong>Fighter</strong> <strong>Wing</strong> as Block 42 F-16C/D unit.<br />
31 March 1993 Williams AFB closed with inactivation of 82d Flying Training<br />
<strong>Wing</strong>. <strong>Luke</strong> assumed responsibility for servicing some 27,000<br />
retirees in East Valley.<br />
18 May 1993 Governor's Regional <strong>Air</strong>port Advisory Committee, formed to<br />
determine if Phoenix area aviation needs better served by<br />
regional or reliever airport, recommended Williams AFB be used<br />
as reliever airport. <strong>Luke</strong> favored recommendation as regional<br />
airport (at Casa Gr<strong>and</strong>e) could have affected access to range.<br />
1 July 1993 58th <strong>Fighter</strong> <strong>Wing</strong> reassigned from ACC to <strong>Air</strong> Education <strong>and</strong><br />
Training Comm<strong>and</strong> (AETC) in move to place all training units in<br />
AETC. <strong>Wing</strong>'s lone operational unit, 607th <strong>Air</strong> Control<br />
Squadron, remained in ACC <strong>and</strong> reassigned to Davis-Monthan<br />
AFB but based at <strong>Luke</strong> as a tenant.<br />
22 September 1993 Work began on $12 million Dysart Canal project to protect base<br />
from future flooding.<br />
9 October 1993 <strong>Luke</strong> <strong>and</strong> Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed<br />
agreement putting base on road to full environmental compliance.<br />
23 October 1993 Range Management Office established as a wing staff agency to<br />
manage operations, scheduling, maintenance of range.<br />
15 November 1993 USAF announced F-15E to move to Seymour Johnson AFB,<br />
North Carolina, in 1995 due to facilities saturation at <strong>Luke</strong>.<br />
Move being made to accommodate Taiwan AF F-16 training<br />
program <strong>and</strong> an F-16 international flying training activity (IFTA).<br />
23 December 1993 EPA policy change requiring federal projects conform to state<br />
environmental requirements resulted in AETC issuing<br />
moratorium on bed down of additional F-16s at <strong>Luke</strong>.<br />
Moratorium in effect until assessment completed to determine<br />
effects of bed down on environment.<br />
31 December 1993 All 58th <strong>Fighter</strong> <strong>Wing</strong> jets equipped with Pratt <strong>and</strong> Whitney 200<br />
engine retrofitted with 220E engine in move to decrease engine<br />
maintenance <strong>and</strong> enhance safety.
