Story
SHAAREI TIKVAH/ CHANUKAH 2009
There is a well known parable describing a person who
sees the back of a tapestry. Horrified by the mess of
strings and knots, he wonders why the artist has spent so
many hours on the production of this eyesore. The artist
quietly leads the onlooker around to the front of the tapestry,
where he is shown the exquisite colors, the striking
design and the beautiful image that is now clear. The onlooker
gasps and exclaims to the artist, “Now I understand!
I was looking at the tapestry from the wrong side.”
This poignant mashal depicts our lives beautifully. During
difficult times, we see life in tangles. Knots and loose
strings are difficult to understand, and we sometimes wonder
at the purpose of it all. We must remember that our
perspective is limited. We see only the back of the tapestry.
The Master Artist is creating a beautiful design that we,
with our limited vision, just cannot fathom.
Some people know from the outset that they may have
problems conceiving and bearing children; for others this
realization is a slow process, only dawning on them after
waiting for seemingly endless months. These people then
have to decide what to do and where to turn. We belonged
to the second category. Our infertility was like a dripping
tap, as slowly but surely, we realized that there was indeed
a problem and that we should really be doing something
