With the development of an innovative welding process,
the Italian company Focusweld is clearly making
its mark on the market. Reduction of energy consumption
and systematic utilization of heat energy are features
currently in high demand.
Welding with reduced
power consumption
Since being founded in 1998, Focusweld
has concentrated on the production
of welding systems and various
processing systems. In addition
to producing capacitor discharge
welding machines, Focusweld also
does contract work at its plant in
turin. experience gained over the
years and continuous research work
were decisive drivers for development
of a new generation of welding
machines.
Welding without deformation
In the course of developing the new
machine series, Focusweld decided
to use a modern welding process
called capacitor discharge welding.
this process uses projection
welding produced by discharging
a stored pulse of electrical energy.
this welding technology is characterized
by a very low supply current
because energy is stored when it is
not being used. Additionally, there
are no voltage fluctuations because
charging is controlled electronically
with stabilized power consumption.
Another important factor is that it is
extremely simple to set the welding
parameters, which results in consistent
quality.
A major characteristic of the welding
process is the concentration of
the energy on the areas that are to
be welded, which prevents deformation
of the welded parts. this makes
it possible to weld closer to areas that
are thermally sensitive. thanks to the
high current and welding speed, it's
possible to weld metals with high
electrical and thermal conductivity as
well as treated steel. Cooling of the
electrodes is no longer necessary,
which positively affects the life span
of the system. Focusweld is a leading
welder manufacturer in Italy: "With
the development of this modern
welding process, we have technologically
unique selling points," states
technical manager Luca moioli.
Application
Capacitor discharge welding
provides a decisive advantage
In general, capacitor discharge
welding is based on the same physical
principle as resistance welding.
the parts to be welded are brought
into contact with each other by applying
pressure and are then fused
together. the contact area is usually
limited, so heat is produced using a
sufficient current level to start the
melting process. "With capacitor dis-
“A special characteristic of our new procedure
is the consistent power and current
supply. Changing to B&R technology allows
us to provide our customers maximum
reliability.“
charge welding, the decisive values
such as power, energy and output
current are at least a power of ten
higher than with conventional welding
methods," explains Luca moioli
and emphasizes that the current values
can reach maximum values >>
