of an implementation partner
through B&R.
the selected partner was Lenzing
technik gmbH, who already had
experience both with B&R process
control technology and with large
process-oriented systems with large
numbers of interfaces for third party
systems. Lenzing technik's separate
development department, existing
B&R testing equipment and ability to
perform ApROL simulations, as well
as the company's experience modifying
systems with minimum downtime
made them the first choice,
and enabled the new system to be
implemented in only a few months
without interrupting operation.
the increase in system availability
alone was a resounding success.
this was made possible by the robust,
touch screen operated industrial
pC - the ApC 810, which operates
without fans or a hard-drive, and
is connected via pOWeRLINK with
the X20 I/O systems, which also increased
the ability to react flexibly to
changing market demands. However,
the practical benefits are primarily
in the maintenance. "We were able
to double our production capacity
without increasing personnel," says
I/O nodes with B&R X20 Systems via POWERLINK.

2007, the Ebensee
plant of the Salinen
Austria AG has
an annual output
of 1.1 million tons
and a storage volume
of 300,000
tons.

Logical second step
The success of the first implementation
lead to the decision to include
the final production phase in the
ApROL process control system as
well. the challenge here was the
heterogeneous structure with different
control systems that must
be coordinated simultaneously, as
well as the numerous complicated
interfaces for cross communication.
then there was the necessity of a
rolling implementation in
existing cabinets with a
limited amount of space,
without stopping production.
One result of this second
step is that the entire salt
production process, from
the mine or laboratory
to the warehouse shelf
has been converted to a
uniform system. Another
is that the acquisition of
operating data and the
automated shipping system
are now completely
integrated. the uniformity
of the user interface
throughout the company
and the increased transparency
of manufacturing
Application
data across all subsystems increase
the reliability when providing each
customer with the product quality
they require.
thanks to the integration of all steps
in the salt production process into
one uniform system, and the utilization
of the most modern technology,
Salinen Austria is now even better
prepared to react quickly and costefficiently
to the demand for their
"white gold".
