in History, although <strong>the</strong>ir degree programme may be in ano<strong>the</strong>r subject area,<br />

will benefit by making explicit efforts to form <strong>the</strong> key history competences.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, History studies are not always organised in such a way as to<br />

encourage <strong>the</strong> formation of some o<strong>the</strong>r generic competences which would be<br />

of use to History graduates, both in <strong>the</strong>ir profession <strong>and</strong> in particularly those<br />

regarding interpersonal skills. For example, whereas ‘teamwork’, ‘decision-making’,<br />

‘ability to communicate with experts in o<strong>the</strong>r fields’ etc. maybe considered<br />

very important in o<strong>the</strong>r subject areas, <strong>the</strong>y are often ignored or not specifically<br />

provided for in History studies.<br />

Consequently, History graduates <strong>and</strong> historical studies will have much to gain if<br />

innovative approaches to learning, teaching <strong>and</strong> assessment are taken into consideration<br />

explicitly <strong>and</strong> implemented. Sharing <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience<br />

available in <strong>the</strong> subject area <strong>and</strong>, particularly, adapting <strong>and</strong> utilising that existing<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r subject areas, will be important tasks for <strong>the</strong> future.<br />
