Purpose<br />

The overall aim is to provide postgraduate students with advanced research skills in<br />

<strong>the</strong> disciplinary area, whilst broadening <strong>the</strong>ir underst<strong>and</strong>ing of more general debates<br />

on societal developments <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> role that history can have in addressing <strong>the</strong>se.<br />

Characteristics<br />

History: Modern <strong>and</strong> Contemporary. The main part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> degree work, corresponding to 120 credits, is devoted<br />

to <strong>the</strong> doctoral research <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>and</strong> comprises research,<br />

analysis of documentation <strong>and</strong> elaboration of <strong>the</strong> written<br />

text according to international st<strong>and</strong>ards of excellence.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r course work or workshops <strong>and</strong> seminars are chosen<br />

by <strong>the</strong> learner/early stage researcher in history or related areas.<br />

History: o<strong>the</strong>r (80:20).<br />

General: The early stage researcher is given full support<br />

in elaborating a research <strong>the</strong>me <strong>and</strong> preparing a practical<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical/methodological strategy for dealing with<br />

it: all <strong>the</strong>mes pertaining to world <strong>and</strong> European history<br />

from 1500 (history of science, gender, politics, imperialism,<br />

decolonisation, nationalism, globalisation, etc.) can be<br />

accepted, if <strong>the</strong>y are consonant with <strong>the</strong> capabilities of <strong>the</strong><br />

doctoral staff.<br />

Research orientation: with a practical component consisting<br />

in training in international project design <strong>and</strong><br />

management.<br />

Whilst most efforts are dedicated to <strong>the</strong> dissertation, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> remaining time <strong>the</strong> early stage researcher may choose<br />

amongst a variety of scientific or <strong>the</strong>oretical courses <strong>and</strong><br />

work oriented activities: e.g. training in editing, communications,<br />

project design <strong>and</strong> funding search.<br />
