Characteristics<br />

History: <strong>the</strong> major emphasis is on history, but some work<br />

in one or more related areas is obligatory. The student<br />

chooses <strong>the</strong> area(s) with reference to his/her specific interest<br />

<strong>and</strong> area of specialisation (such as sociology, anthropology,<br />

archaeology, art history, area studies, communications<br />

studies, economics, international relations or a language).<br />

History; minor; electives (70:20:10).<br />

General: with emphasis on developing a broad overview<br />

as well a deep knowledge of <strong>the</strong> relationship of <strong>the</strong> human<br />

past <strong>and</strong> present <strong>and</strong> an ability to underst<strong>and</strong> critically <strong>the</strong><br />

transformations that <strong>the</strong> practice of historiography is undergoing<br />

today.<br />

Research orientation: emphasizing both individual <strong>and</strong><br />

group research competences; strong emphasis also on writing<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r forms of communication in own language <strong>and</strong><br />

fl uent use of a European <strong>and</strong> a non-European language.<br />

The programme develops European <strong>and</strong> world history perspectives<br />

as deep knowledge <strong>and</strong> a critical approach to national<br />

<strong>and</strong> regional historiographies. Spatial as well as diachronic<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>matic aspects of History from <strong>the</strong> Middle<br />

Ages to <strong>the</strong> present are cultivated. Students are encouraged<br />

to take advantage of possibilities for study outside Europe<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>sis work, although this is not obligatory.<br />

Positions at Postgraduate (MA) level in <strong>the</strong> public/private<br />

administrations, museums, archives (with minor <strong>and</strong> electives<br />

in archival studies), communications, journalism, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

with additional qualification, secondary school teaching ,<br />

<strong>and</strong> historical research<br />

Access to related third cycle (doctoral) programmes; access<br />

to fur<strong>the</strong>r qualification for secondary school teaching (on a<br />

numerus clausus basis in Arcadia).<br />
