Senior Medication Awareness Training Program<br />

This program is sponsored by Riverside County <strong>of</strong>fice on Aging. COME GET YOUR<br />

SMARxT CARD. The SMARxT Card Program was created in response to the fact<br />

that older adults are at risk from improper use <strong>of</strong> medication. In the year 2000,<br />

the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) noted that approximately 10,000 people die<br />

each year due to this problem.<br />

(Caregiver’s Support Group)<br />

If you are caring for a loved one who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or any<br />

other disability, then come and share your difficulties with people who can help.<br />

This group <strong>of</strong>fers lots <strong>of</strong> support, information and help for caregivers.<br />

The Seniors Golden Years organization provides free blood pressure checks. If you<br />

Picking up the Pieces<br />

Bereavement Support Group<br />

Hospice <strong>of</strong> the Valleys provides a weekly bereavement support group at the Mary<br />

Phillips Senior Center. These groups are supportive gatherings focused on the<br />

normal and unique responses following the death <strong>of</strong> a loved one. For information<br />

regarding available services please call Hospice <strong>of</strong> the Valleys at 672-1666.<br />

AARP<br />

American Association <strong>of</strong> Retired Persons. This senior citizen’s advocacy group is<br />

very active in senior issues and welcomes new members.<br />

55 Alive Driver Program<br />

AARP sponsors a driver improvement class that may entitle you to a reduction in<br />

your auto insurance premiums, as well as refreshing your knowledge <strong>of</strong> the rules<br />

<strong>of</strong> the road. This is an eight-hour class. Pre-registration is required. Payment is<br />

made directly to AARP. Call the Mary Phillips Senior Center at 694-6464 for dates<br />

Grandparents Support Group<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Temecula</strong>, in conjunction with the Office <strong>of</strong> Aging, is committed to<br />

helping grandparents, relatives, caregivers and children in developing,<br />

maintaining and strengthening the family.<br />

Social Security Information<br />

A representative from Social Security will be at the Mary Phillips Senior Center to<br />

answer your questions, replace lost social security cards and set up<br />

appointments for retirement. No appointment is necessary, seen on First-come,<br />

first-served basis. If you cannot come during the designated time, you can get<br />

more information 24 hours a day by calling Social Security's toll-free number,<br />

1-800-772-1213.<br />

Health Insurance Counseling<br />

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) is here to help<br />

you sort through any confusion about Medicare and health insurance. A qualified<br />

HICAP counselor will provide free counseling, answer health insurance questions<br />

and provide information on Medicare and other forms <strong>of</strong> health insurance.<br />

Counselors can also help with information on insurance scams that target the<br />

senior population. HICAP is funded by the California Office on Aging and does not<br />

sell, recommend or endorse any insurance policy or health plan.<br />

Senior Transport Program<br />

Don’t sit inside…call us for your next ride...to the Mary Phillips Senior Center! The<br />

Senior Transport Program <strong>of</strong>fers door-to-door round-trip transportation to the<br />

Mary Phillips Senior Center. For more information call 694-6464.<br />

Days: Monday through Friday<br />

Pick-up Time: 9:00-10:30am<br />

Return Time: 1:30-3:30pm<br />

Reservations: Call 694-6464 at least 24 hours in advance<br />

Fee: $.50/Resident; $1.00/Non-resident<br />

RTA Riverside Transit Authority<br />

RTA is <strong>of</strong>fering a reduced fare for seniors (60 and above) and persons with<br />

disabilities on fixed bus route service program. General fares are normally $1.25.<br />

However, you can purchase a photo ID card for $2.00. This will reduce the cost<br />

<strong>of</strong> your fare to 60 cents. The card is valid for 3 years. An RTA customer service<br />

specialist will be on hand for questions and assistance.<br />
