<strong>The</strong> <strong>Bluets</strong> 73<br />

held Ragland (Petronella‘s uncle) and from whom the southwestern<br />

(Somerset, Dorset, Devon) and many ex-patriate <strong>Bluets</strong> are descended.<br />

Initially only his grandson was known, the Ralph Bluet who married Amicia<br />

Picard (see above). This witness list shows that Walter‘s son (Petronella‘s<br />

cousin) was also Ralph and this is what is shown in Fig. 8 . <strong>The</strong> dates for<br />

this Ralph are not known, but he was obviously of age for this charter.<br />

Dating the charter is complicated by the fact that the dates for the<br />

witnesses are uncertain, but it has been suggested 305 it is between 1194<br />

– 1199 306 .<br />

Ralph and Nest‘s other daughter Alda married Almaric Despencer, who<br />

was Sheriff of Rutland to Henry II (in 1188) and Richard I (in 1189). He<br />

was also Steward to Richard. He was one of the barons who rebelled<br />

against King John and brother of Thurstan who was held by Roland Bluet<br />

Alda Bluet gave a virgate of land she held in Worcestershire to the<br />

Priory of Little Malvern and this record reveals that she and Almaric had<br />

two sons Thurstan and Ralph 308 .<br />

Emma Bluet entered the nunnery at Godstow although the date is<br />

uncertain. She rose to be Abbess in 1248 and resigned in 1266 309 . It is<br />

almost certain that land would have been granted to the Nunnery when<br />

she entered but there is no mention of this in the Godstow records; the<br />

comnfirmavi. Hiis testibus, Radulpho Bloet, Radulpho filio ejus, Radulpho Bloet<br />

filio Walteri Bloet, Ricardo de Herierd, Roberto filio Pagani, Rogero filio ejus,<br />

Willielmo Briwere, Petro de Scudamore, Roberto de Berkleya, Johanne de Warra,<br />

Helya de Strodleya, Gilberto capellano, Robert capellano, Waltero clerico, qui<br />

hanc hane cartam fecit et aliis (our emphasis)<br />

Interestingly there is a reference to Dame Parnel Bluet‘s lands at Lacock in<br />

a quitclaim of 1314 but there is no other indication of a Parnel Bluet at this<br />

date; it is possible that this recalls Petronella‘s ownership of the land but this<br />

would be unusual over this length of time.<br />
