Signs & Symptoms
~ Males & Females usually experience:
o Primary (3 weeks after exposure)
• Sore (chancre) on penis, vagina, rectum, anus, or
cervix

• Rash on hands and feet
• Flu-like symptoms including appetite loss, fever, sore
throat, nausea, headache
o Tertiary (lOto 20 years later)
· Severe nerve damage

This is a infection caused by bacteria so it is a
STD that can be treated with antibiotics.
Both partners must be treated at the same
time.

o Blindness
o Infection of a fetus, causing death or severe
retardation
