UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION<br />

TO HEALTH<br />

Unit Outcome: Students will acquire the knowledge that growth and development of unique individuals<br />

is influenced by physical, mental and social forces.<br />

Outcome #1: Students will demonstrate the ability to outline the process used to achieve a healthy life<br />

style and the need for health promotion and responsible decision making in each of the ten areas of<br />

health, through self - discipline and commitment in making health a life priority.<br />

* identify the process for having a healthy lifestyle.<br />

* list the ten areas of health and explain the holistic approach to health.<br />

Outcome #2: Students will demonstrate the ability to discuss the process to follow for achieving a<br />

healthful lifestyle through healthful goal setting, and making plans to reach goals.<br />

* examine the importance of making plans to reach goals.<br />

* repeat the World Health Organization's definition of health.<br />

explain the impact of the four most harmful components of life style (excessive use of drugs, lack<br />

of exercise, insufficient relaxation, and improper diet)<br />

Outcome #3: Students will demonstrate the ability to differentiate between risk and wellness behavior<br />

through class discussion; health promotion activities; and use the Health Triangle and Behavior<br />

Wheel to depict the holistic effects of healthful and hannful behavior on the ten components of<br />

health.<br />

* differentiate between healthful behavior and risk behavior.<br />

* explain the relationship between health promotion and optimum health.<br />

* define health status and discuss its relationship to the overall health scale.<br />

* explain how healthful behaviors and risk behaviors affect the health status ofthe entire<br />

family.<br />

Outcome #4: Students will demonstrate the ability to discuss the commitment and self - discipline<br />

needed for a healthy lifestyle by being able to explain the effect of self - motivation on personal<br />

health behavior and being able to list and explain four suggestions to self - motivation.<br />

* develop three personal motivational strategies to encourage self - discipline and commitment to<br />

healthy behavior.<br />

* define terms including self - motivation, self - discipline, etc.<br />
