IDENTIFYING AND SERVING STUDENTS WHO ARE GIFTED IN THE ARTS<br />

Access to arts education <strong>in</strong>cludes ensur<strong>in</strong>g that students who are gifted <strong>in</strong> the arts<br />

receive appropriate arts <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />

Forty-two percent <strong>of</strong> schools that responded to the <strong>Status</strong> Survey reported that they identified students<br />

gifted <strong>in</strong> the visual and perform<strong>in</strong>g arts. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to ODE data, <strong>Ohio</strong>’s public schools identified 19,771<br />

students as gifted <strong>in</strong> the visual and perform<strong>in</strong>g arts <strong>in</strong> 2009-2010. Of those 19,771 students, 1,048<br />

received gifted education services <strong>in</strong> the arts.<br />

PROVIDING EXTRACURRICULAR ARTS EXPERIENCES<br />

Access to arts education <strong>in</strong>cludes provid<strong>in</strong>g opportunities to apply and extend<br />

arts knowledge and skills ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the classroom or simply enjoy the arts.<br />

Extracurricular <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> at least one arts discipl<strong>in</strong>e was reported by 72 percent <strong>of</strong> high schools,<br />

49 percent <strong>of</strong> middle schools and 37 percent <strong>of</strong> elementary schools. As shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 7,<br />

extracurricular music and drama/theatre showed the highest participation, especially <strong>in</strong> high schools.<br />
