PRIORITIES: WHERE SHOULD WE FOCUS OUR EFFORTS?<br />
Based on the report f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs related to conditions <strong>of</strong> high quality, the <strong>Ohio</strong> Alliance<br />
for <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Education</strong>, the <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong> and the <strong>Ohio</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> will<br />
emphasize the follow<strong>in</strong>g priorities <strong>in</strong> their efforts to help susta<strong>in</strong> and strengthen<br />
<strong>Ohio</strong>’s arts education <strong>in</strong>frastructure:<br />
• Determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g where the most significant gaps <strong>in</strong> quality conditions exist and<br />
what can be done to help address those gaps.<br />
• Deepen<strong>in</strong>g educators’ understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong>’s newly adopted arts learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
standards and assist<strong>in</strong>g schools and districts <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g approaches for<br />
implementation.<br />
• Conduct<strong>in</strong>g research about how teachers are assess<strong>in</strong>g their students <strong>in</strong> the<br />
arts and what is be<strong>in</strong>g done to encourage the use <strong>of</strong> district-wide arts<br />
assessments.<br />
• Investigat<strong>in</strong>g further the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g that district arts coord<strong>in</strong>ators are more<br />
prevalent nationally than they are <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong> and devis<strong>in</strong>g strategies to improve<br />
arts supervision across the state.<br />
• Promot<strong>in</strong>g the use <strong>of</strong> community resources to enrich curriculum and<br />
<strong>in</strong>struction, as well as close some <strong>of</strong> the gaps <strong>in</strong> access to dance and<br />
drama/theatre.<br />
<strong>Status</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong>’s <strong>Public</strong> Schools 48
