SUPPORTING EXCELLENCE IN PRACTICE<br />

Appropriate staff<strong>in</strong>g, leadership and coord<strong>in</strong>ation, collegial relationships, plann<strong>in</strong>g time<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>essional learn<strong>in</strong>g create the conditions for excellence <strong>in</strong> teacher practice.<br />

Staff<strong>in</strong>g: N<strong>in</strong>ety-three percent <strong>of</strong> traditional public schools that responded to the <strong>Status</strong> Survey reported<br />

employ<strong>in</strong>g at least one full-time equivalent (FTE) teacher <strong>of</strong> the arts <strong>in</strong> 2009-2010. As shown <strong>in</strong> Figure<br />

13, most <strong>of</strong> those teachers were employed <strong>in</strong> the areas <strong>of</strong> music and visual arts, but 29 percent <strong>of</strong> high<br />

schools reported an FTE teacher <strong>in</strong> drama/theatre.<br />

Figure 13 also shows that elementary schools were more likely to employ an FTE music teacher<br />

(88 percent) than an FTE visual arts<br />

teacher (78 percent).<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to ODE data, a majority <strong>of</strong><br />

arts educators work <strong>in</strong> only one school.<br />

As Table 8 shows, music and visual arts<br />

teachers more <strong>of</strong>ten teach <strong>in</strong> more than<br />

one school than dance or drama/theatre<br />

teachers. N<strong>in</strong>e percent <strong>of</strong> the 46 dance<br />

teachers (four teachers) taught <strong>in</strong><br />

multiple schools, and four percent <strong>of</strong><br />

drama/theatre teachers (about 13<br />

teachers) taught <strong>in</strong> multiple schools.<br />

ODE data also showed that 37 percent <strong>of</strong> middle school arts educators taught <strong>in</strong> multiple schools,<br />

compared to those who work <strong>in</strong> elementary schools (31 percent) and high schools (32 percent).<br />
