CREATING CONDITIONS FOR HIGH QUALITY<br />
<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g conditions support high-quality arts education:<br />
• A course <strong>of</strong> study <strong>in</strong> the arts that aligns with arts learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
standards, specifies learn<strong>in</strong>g and performance objectives and<br />
establishes scope and sequence.<br />
• Effective assessment <strong>of</strong> student progress.<br />
• Teachers who engage <strong>in</strong> ongo<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>essional learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• Leadership and work<strong>in</strong>g conditions that support<br />
collaboration, reflection and cont<strong>in</strong>uous improvement.<br />
• Supportive classroom environments and community<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from the <strong>Status</strong> Survey, considered alongside ODE data from 2009-2010, provide <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
about <strong>Ohio</strong>’s status <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g each <strong>of</strong> those areas.<br />
FINDINGS: WHAT DO THE DATA SAY?<br />
Summary: N<strong>in</strong>ety percent <strong>of</strong> schools have aligned arts <strong>in</strong>struction with <strong>Ohio</strong>’s arts learn<strong>in</strong>g standards<br />
and 88 percent use teacher-developed arts assessments. Educators who are licensed to teach the arts<br />
provide all arts <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> 83 percent <strong>of</strong> schools. Sixty-four percent <strong>of</strong> schools provide some<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>in</strong> the arts. Use <strong>of</strong> dedicated classrooms varies by arts discipl<strong>in</strong>e and school<br />
level. Technology <strong>in</strong> arts classrooms is most prevalent <strong>in</strong> high schools.<br />
ADOPTING AND ADDRESSING OHIO’S ARTS LEARNING STANDARDS<br />
<strong>Ohio</strong>’s arts learn<strong>in</strong>g standards provide schools<br />
with a framework for high-quality arts <strong>in</strong>struction.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>Status</strong> Survey, 71 percent <strong>of</strong> schools reported that<br />
their local boards <strong>of</strong> education adopted <strong>Ohio</strong>’s arts learn<strong>in</strong>g standards.<br />
N<strong>in</strong>ety percent <strong>of</strong> survey respondents have aligned their arts curricula<br />
with those standards.<br />
As Figure 10 shows, 10 percent <strong>of</strong> schools reported that their<br />
boards <strong>of</strong> education had not adopted the arts learn<strong>in</strong>g standards,<br />
and 19 percent reported align<strong>in</strong>g their curricula with the standards<br />
without board adoption. Fifty-six percent reported that their arts<br />
curricula have been aligned with the standards for five years or<br />
