Shakespeare in American Communities – Shakespeare
in American Communities is a national theater initiative
sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in
cooperation with Arts Midwest. Shakespeare in American
Communities brings professional theater productions of
Shakespeare and related educational activities to Americans
throughout the country, in communities of all sizes. In
addition to performances, activities include artistic and
technical workshops, symposia about the productions, and
educational programs in local schools. Theater partners for
Shakespeare in American Communities are selected yearly
through a competitive application and panel review process.

FEDERAL PROGRAMS
The Arts on Radio and Television (CFDA No. 45.024)
– Program supports projects for radio and television arts
programs that are intended for national broadcast.
The Big Read – The purpose of The Big Read is to encourage
literary reading. Big Read grants, ranging from $2,500 -
$20,000, are available to revitalize the role of literature in
American culture. Organizations selected to participate in
The Big Read will receive a grant, financial support to attend
a national orientation meeting, educational and promotional
materials for broad distribution, Organizers Guide for
developing and managing Big Read activities, inclusion of your
organization and activities on The Big Read website, and the
prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative.

Grant Amount for Radio Projects –
$10,000 to $100,000
Grant Amount for Television Projects –
Research and development grants generally
range from $10,000 to $25,000. Grants for
single documentaries generally range from
$25,000 to $50,000. Grants for multi-part
series vary according to the complexity
and scope of the project. In rare instances,
the Arts Endowment may recommend an
award over $200,000 for a project with
demonstrated quality, significance, and
impact.
