INTRODUCTION
cAMPUS cONTEXT / Background
PLU was founded in 1890 by Lutherans in the Puget Sound area with strong ties to their
Scandinavian heritage. The founders envisioned and established an educational institution (and
then the university) to further their mission of serving church and community. The campus is
located in suburban Parkland in Pierce County, Washington. PLU’s 155-acre campus is just south
of the Tacoma city limits, 40 miles south of Seattle, and 20 miles north of Olympia. Mount
Rainier and the Washington coast are within two hours of the campus.

Today, PLU has an enrollment of about 3,550 students. As a member of the New American
Colleges and Universities, PLU is committed to the integration of liberal arts studies and
professional preparation programs. PLU has four professional schools including a School of
Arts and Communication, School of Business, School of Education and Movement Studies,
and School of Nursing, as well as three academic divisions in the College of Arts & Sciences
- Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. PLU also offers graduate programs in
Business Administration, Creative Writing, Education, Nursing, and Marriage and Family Therapy.
PLU remains closely affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is dedicated
to educating its students for lives of thoughtful inquiry, service, leadership and care for other
people, for their communities, and for the earth.
