Затонувшая Атлантида
Санторини – одно из самых древних поселений на
планете. В деревне Акротири, расположенной на югозападном
побережье острова, под слоем пепла археологи
обнаружили прекрасный минойский город XVI века
до нашей эры: мощеные улицы, здания, в которых
сохранились вторые и третьи этажи с лестницами,
необыкновенно красочные фрески в красных и синих
тонах, характерные для минойской эры.
Однако примерно в 1500 году до нашей эры в центре
острова произошло сильнейшее извержение вулкана,
в результате которого большая его часть погрузилась
в море. Гигантские волны цунами обрушились на северное
побережье Крита и разрушили Кносский дворец.
А от древней Стронгилы остался только видимый в настоящее
время полумесяц...
Необычная судьба Санторини сделала его одним из самых
интересных и загадочных островов Эгейского моря.
Жак-Ив Кусто, изучив описания Платона, даже предположил,
что это остатки ушедшей под воду Атлантиды.
The Legend of Atlantis
Santorini ranks as one of the oldest
human settlements on the globe. In
the village of Acrotiri at the southwestern
coast of the island, archaeological
excavations have unearthed
a beautiful Minoan town dating back
to the 16th century B.C. The site gives
evidence of paved streets, buildings of
two and three storeys with staircases,
and unusually stunning frescoes with
red and blue tones that typify the
Minoan era.
At approximately 1,500 B.C., a tremendous
volcanic eruption occurred
on the island, which was once many
times larger, causing most of it to
fall into the sea. A gigantic tsunami
caused by the eruption hit the northern
coast of Crete, destroying the
Knossos Palace. All that remains of
the earlier Santorini is the crescent of
rocky isles that many believe to be the
fabled lost city of Atlantis.

The unusual history of Santorini
makes it one of the most interesting
and mysterious islands in the
Aegean Sea. Pioneering French
mariner Jacques-Yves Cousteau
used his studies of historical records
prepared by the Greek philosopher
Plato to suggest that Santorini is
in fact the remnant of the sunken
Atlantis of lore.
