“Lvov likes drinking; is skilled

because Lvov was famous for

introduced during the Soviet rule,

is the portrait of ayoung girl 

with clear eyes, rosy cheeks, 

and almost transparent shining 

face. We talk about the wellknown 

Infanta pained by Diego 

Velazquez, the court painter at 

the times of the Spanish king 

Phillip IV, and the girl we see 

at the picture is the nine-year-old 

Spanish princess Margarita.

отеля «Аврора» 

17 октября в роскошном зале 

ресторана «Аристократ» состоялся 

торжественный прием 

по случаю празднования первой 

годовщины бизнес-отеля 

«Аврора». Вечер начался с 

красивой истории о том, как 

боги-олимпийцы встречают и 

чествуют прекрасную богиню 

утренней зари Аврору, именем 

которой назван отель. 

На празднике присутствовали более 100 гостей, среди которых были 

руководители компаний, представители городской власти, туристических 

фирм, банков, а также сферы образования, культуры, транспорта 

и журналисты. Гостей развлекали легкой джазовой музыкой, веселыми 

конкурсами и поздравлениями в стихах, а изысканные угощения от ресторана 

– запеченные мидии, тыквенный суп, корзиночки из пармезана 

и прекрасные вина – стали замечательным дополнением к празднику. 

Приветствуя гостей, директор отеля «Аврора» Артем Николаевич Лобойко 

выразил благодарность всем партнерам и отметил, что персонал и руководство 

гостиницы за этот год прошли большой путь, и главными их 

достижениями на сегодняшний день являются стабильность и динамичность 

в работе, профессионализм персонала и комфорт, который гарантирован 

гостям отеля. Генеральный директор сети Premier Hotels Ирина 

Седлецкая поздравила отель «Аврора» с первым юбилеем и отметила, что, 

несмотря на столь юный возраст, он уже успел стать достойным представителем 

в коллекции лучших украинских гостиниц Premier Hotels. Перед 

гостями также выступили представитель Харьковского Горсовета департамента 

подготовки к «Евро-2012» Владимир Алексеевич Громов, директор

туристической компании «Спорт Лайн Тревел» Маргарита Григорьева. 

Кульминацией вечера стали церемония награждения партнеров памятными 

подарками и, конечно же, праздничный торт. 

The 1st Anniversary 

of Aurora Hotel 

On October 17th, the luxury hall of the 

AristÔcrate Restaurant welcomed more 

then 100 guests to celebrate the 1st anniversary 

of the Aurora Business Hotel. 

The party has started from the beautiful 

story about the goddess of sunrise Aurora 

whose name is given to the Hotel. 

The anniversary was visited by the 

leaders of the different companies, 

travel agencies, banks, the representatives 

of the city authorities, cultural 

organizations and the mass media 

were also present on the party. Relaxing 

jazz music, exciting competitions, 

oysters, wonderful wines – became 

the remarkable complement to the 

celebration ceremony. 

The Hotel director Artem Loboyko 

in his speech underlined that the 

Hotel team worked hard and its main 

progress is stability, dynamic approach 

to work, professionalism of the staff 

and the comfort that is guaranteed to 

the guests. Iryna Sidletska, director 

general of the Premier Hotels chain, 

congratulated Aurora Hotel to the first 

anniversary and pointed that, in spite 

of a young age, the hotel is worth to be 

a part of Premier Hotels collection. 

The culmination of the evening was 

the ceremony of the partners' awards 

and of course, the holiday cake.

конкурс камерных оркестров «Премьер Оркестр 2009». 

Условия конкурса были официально оглашены на прессконференции, 

которая состоялась 20 октября 2008 года в Национальной

will Celebrate 100 Anniversary 

Premier Palace, a unique historical hotel, will celebrate its 100th 

anniversary. The nationwide competition of chamber orchestras 

called “Premier Orchestra” will be a part of the hotel’s anniversary 

celebration. 

The terms of competition were officially announced at the press 

conference on October, 20, 2008 at the National philharmonic society.

Palace Hotel and on the site of the National philharmonic 

society of Ukraine. Due to cooperation of the National 

philharmonic society of Ukraine and Premier Palace 

Hotel domestic chamber orchestras will have

Фотовыставка экс-президента Словакии 

Гостиница «Ореанда» имела честь принимать у себя экс-президента Словакии 

Рудольфа Шустера, фотовыставка которого прошла в Ливадийском дворце. 

Господин Шустер увлекается художественной фотографией и не расстается 

с фотоаппаратом в своих многочисленных деловых и культурных поездках. 

10 октября состоялось открытие его персональной выставки «Калейдоскоп 

мира». Это кадры, снятые в самых экзотических и красивых уголках мира, и почетное 

место среди них занимают живописные пейзажи Крыма, к которому 

у экс-президента Словакии особое отношение. 

«Я неоднократно бывал в Крыму и даже провел здесь вместе с семьей свой президентский 

отпуск. Эти поездки убедили меня, что этот живописный уголок прекрасен 

в любое время года. Но осень здесь особенно интересна: буйство красок, 

отсутствие жары и, конечно же, 

особенный, насыщенный ароматами

Photo-Exhibition of the Ex-President of Slovakia 

Oreanda Hotel had an honor to accommodate Rudolf Shuster, the ex-president of Slovakia, 

whose exhibition took place in Livadia palace. 

Besides active political activity mister Shuster takes a great interest in photography, always taking 

his camera with him to the numerous business and cultural trips. 

On October 10, his personal exhibition “Kaleidoscope of the world” was opened. The exhibition 

presents a selection of images taken in the most exotic and beautiful spots of the planet, 

and picturesque photos of Crimea occupies a place of honor among them. Mr.Shuster declares 

his special attitude to Crimea. 

“I visited the Crimea more than once and even had 

my presidential holiday with my family here. These 

trips have convinced me, that Crimea is beautiful 

any time of the year. But the autumn is really gorgeous 

here, with its variety of colors, comfortable 

temperature, and balmy Crimean air!” 

On his trip to Yalta, Mr. Shuster is accompanied 

by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador 

of Slovakia in Ukraine Urban Rusnak and 

the Honorable Consul of Slovakia in Ukraine 

Stanislav Obitsky.

В начале ноября в Одессе произошло 

долгожданное и почти невероятное 

событие – с единственным 

концертом в Украине город 

посетила Монсеррат Кабалье. 

Несмотря на развешенные по всему 

городу баннеры и афиши, одесситы 

до последнего не верили, что это 

чудо произойдет. Не вызывали сомнения 

только два обстоятельства: 

где будет петь Кабалье – конечно, 

в Опере, и где она будет жить – 

естественно, в «Лондонской»! 

Несмотря на усталость, оперная 

дива была царственно доброжелательна 

с персоналом, имела очень 

скромные требования и подписала 

не только фото для музея гостиницы, 

но и диски для сотрудников.

The long-awaited and almost unbelievable 

event happened in Odessa at the 

beginning of November. 

Montserrat Caballe, a well-known operatic 

soprano, visited Odessa with the 

unique concert in Ukraine 

In spite of the banners and playbills 

spread over the city, Odessa citizens 

didn’t believe that this miracle would 

happen. There were no doubts only in 

two circumstances: 1) where will be the 

performance – certainly, in Opera! and 

2) where Caballe’ will stay–, obviously 

in Londonskaya! 

In spite of fatigue, opera diva was friendly 

with the personnel and agreed to sign 

not only a photo for the museum of the

20 ноября весь мир начинает отмечать 

праздник молодого французского вина. 

«Божоле» созревает раньше других вин 

и именно в молодом возрасте отличается 

особым вкусом и ароматом букета. 

В этом году благодаря солнечной сухой 

погоде напиток получился сочным, 

с ароматом фруктов. 

По случаю праздника в отеле «Космополит» 

(Харьков) прошла дегустация, 

и каждый гость имел возможность бесплатно 

попробовать молодое вино, чтобы 

составить свое мнение о том, насколько 

хорошо удалось виноделам Beaujolais 

Nouveau в этом году. Гостям не пришлось 

утруждать себя подбором блюд – в дни 

молодого «Божоле» шеф-повар ресторана 

уже сделал это за них и подготовил 

мясные кушанья, которые прекрасно 

дополнили и оттенили вкус напитка:

November 20th was the time the entire 

world celebrated the young French 

wine feast. The Beaujolais becomes 

ready for drinking much earlier than 

other sorts of wine do, and it is exactly 

at young age that the wine has its 

distinctive taste and aroma. This year's 

sunny and rainless weather has made 

it possible to acquire saturated and 

taste-rich wine. 

The aforesaid occasion opened 

the doors of Kosmopolit Hotel in 

Kharkov for a wine tasting event 

whereby visitors were offered some 

young wine free of charge to have 

their own opinion about this year's 

Beaujolais Nouveau. The invitees 

did not have to think much about 

the refreshments since the kitchen 

manager had already prepared some 

meat courses fitting such kind of wine 

in the best way, and namely: 

• Pork with almond breading and 

caramel apples; 

• Beef steak called Caffeine; 

• Rabbit meat stuffed with mushrooms 

and bacon with queen-apples; 

• Quails stuffed with gorgonzola 

cheese, mashed potatoes, 

and celery; and 

• Duck brisket meat with persimmon

by the people of this old city at old good times. And they 

said that because Lviv was famous for its best beer 

nationwide and the superb vodka. The standard 

Ukrainian word “kavyarnya” was introduced 

during the Soviet rule, but it sounds somewhat 

weird for all true Lviv townspeople

such a group had to be very careful if they 

intended to say something bad about it.

In fact, the coffee drinking tradition was 

coined in the 18th century in Lviv, although 

this drink had been known to the local 

people long before that time. The very first 

café in the Ukraine and Poland (or Recz 

Pospolita by that time) was established in 

1672 in Kamieniec-Podolski. There were 

as much as ten cafés in that town, founded 

by the Turks. In 1683, the first café was 

founded in Vienna by Juri Kulczycki who 

had got the entire stock of coffee the Turks 

had brought with them as they attempted 

to conquer the Austrian capital. As we can 

see now, coffee came to Lviv both from the 

East and from the West, and then became 

very popular among rather rich people and 

later among the entire population of the 

city. 

According to historical records, it became 

a custom for the townspeople to ask for a cup 

of coffee once they wake up and open their 

eyes in the morning. It was the way they followed 

the medical prescriptions claiming that 

it would not be a right thing for one’s health 

to get up and go out fasting. Some women 

had a special whim about coffee; they would 

usually take it with them as they headed for

a church service to sip some coffee after the 

Communion ceremony because they thought 

it would protect the Communion bread and 

wine from bad air.

и сразу взялись за обустройство центральной части города. 

Благодаря ним во Львове появился променад, куда сразу выплеснулись 

толпы гуляющих мещан. Здесь открылись уютные павильончики и «цукерни», 

где торговали разными напитками и кофе в том числе. Именно из этих «цукерень» 

кофе и начал свой победный поход по завоеванию львовской публики. 

As the Austrians gained control over 

Lviv region in 1772, they started 

numerous urban improvements in 

the city center. They built the promenade 

thoroughfare, which soon 

became very popular with the 

townspeople as they liked to stroll 

there and to attend those convenient 

small cafés and candy stores 

where various drinks, including 

coffee, could be purchased. Those 

candy stores were actually the 

foothold for coffee to gain the 

popularity among the city dwellers. 

As far as the local cafés are concerned, 

their history is a bit shorter 

than that of the local candy stores. 

There was only one café by 1829 and 

it was called ‘Videnska’ (‘Viennese 

Café’), while it was noted by German 

traveler Mr. Kohl in 1841 that great many 

cafés and candy stores were available in 

Lviv by that time and that those places 

were even better and more elegant than 

those in his home tome of Dresden. 

The first decade of the 20th century was a 

golden age for the café business in Lviv as a 

great number of such places were opened and 

many old ones were reconstructed. Most of 

them had their own specific design and style. 

At that time, local cafés were rather gathering 

places for entrepreneurs, city newcomers, 

and government officials as well as for some 

actors, artists, and journalists. Retirees were 

also a considerable group of the café habitués 

since they could afford it in general, so they

время в основном посещали коммерсанты, приезжие, высшие 

чины урядников, актеры и журналисты. Значительную часть 

завсегдатаев кофеен составляли пенсионеры, которые не могли 

не считаться с расходами. Собирались они там на «малу чорну» 

и для чтения газет. 

Кофеен, служивших одновременно и читальней, и художественным 

салоном, было десятки. В межвоенный период ресторация 

«Атляс», что располагалась на площади Рынок, 45, считалась настоящим 

Парнасом творческого Львова. Сюда приходили все 

самые известные личности того времени, а это, в свою очередь, 

привлекало людей из других заведений. Желание пообщаться 

с писателями, журналистами, художниками и актерами проявляли 

и «денежные мешки»: нефтяные магнаты, банкиры, помещики, 

графы и князья. Тут за одним столом сидели известные

There were dozens of such cafés, a kind 

of reading halls and art shows at the same 

time. Between the two world wars, there 

were ‘Atlas’ café at 45 Rynok Square. The 

place was known as the Parnassus for the 

arts people in Lviv.

Many famous people used to visit that café 

by the time and this fact, in turn, attracted 

many visitors from other places and towns. 

Some financial oligarchs and members of 

the gentry would also wish to meet famous 

writers, journalists, painters, and actors 

who spent time in ‘Atlas’. Long story short, 

people of very different fortune and nature 

would easily sit together and communicate 

without all those restraints and limitations 

they had to obey outside of the café.

«Кофейня в те времена заменяла клуб – тут велись бурные 

дискуссии на политические и литературные темы, – писал 

М. Рудницкий. – Здесь проводили по полдня, иногда и больше, 

писатели, считавшие, что только в такой шумной, наполненной 

дымом атмосфере рождаются гениальные идеи и сюжеты». 

Кофе до сих пор остается для львовян лучшим посредником в 

решении любых вопросов или поводом для дружеских встреч. 

Если у американцев принято приглашать даму на ужин, то во 

Львове – «на кофе», хотя, конечно, одним кофе дело не ограничивается. 

Неудивительно, что в одной старой песенке поется: 

«Кава, кава мусить бути. 

Як нема кави, нема забави – 

Кава мусить бути!» 

А среди популярных львовских ругательств есть и такое: «Най 

тебе нагла чорна кава заллє!» – на русский язык это переводится 

с трудом. Возможно, это намек на то, что в жилах настоящего 

львовянина больше кофе, чем крови.

Ivan Franko, a famous Ukrainian poet and 

political figure, would usually avoid taverns 

and restaurants, but made an exception for 

‘Monopoli’ where he liked to sit down at 

a separate table and preferred to stay on his 

own. People who wished to see Mr. Franko on 

some business knew that they could find him 

there after midday. Young writers who would 

not otherwise dare to approach him could use 

this opportunity to show their literary works 

to the famous poet. Mr. Rudnytski wrote that 

“a café was a kind of club at that time, as some 

political issues and matters of literature were 

often discussed there, and some writers would 

sometimes spend there a half of a day and even 

longer since they were convinced that only 

such noisy and cigar-smoked environment can 

induce some brilliant ideas and inventions, 

and even make them real sometimes”. 

Coffee is still a miraculous go-between for 

the citizens of Lviv when they try to solve 

some issues, and it also remains a good reason 

for friends to get together. The Americans 

normally invite a lady for dinner, but 

such invitation usually sounds ‘for a cup of 

coffee’ in Lviv, although it is clear that coffee 

shall not be the only thing here. So there is 

no wonder that an old local song has a few 

lines reading as follows: 

“Coffee, coffee should be there; 

For if there is no coffee, no joy will be there, 

So coffee should be there!” 

And when it comes to some popular bad 

language in Lviv, we can find one that 

translates “Let black coffee pour you up to 

your top!” Perhaps, this cursing means that 

there is more coffee than blood in the veins 

of a typical citizen of Lviv.

Когда испанское женское имя стало 

названием автомобиля, вряд ли 

кто-то догадывался, что ему суждено 

пережить века и стать настоящей 

легендой. Но прежде чем получить 

свое название – Мерседес – автомобилю 

предстоял долгий путь… • A woman’s 

Spanish name meaning “grace” could not help 

becoming a fateful one for the cars produced 

under the make of Mercedes. But it took a long 

time for them to get this name. 

Изобретенный в 80-х годах позапрошлого века двигатель 

внутреннего сгорания дал возможность Готлибу Даймлеру 

и Карлу Бенцу – независимо друг от друга – заложить 

основы моторизации дорожного транспорта. 

В 1882 году Готлиб Даймлер открыл свою собственную мастерскую 

в Канштадте, позже к нему присоединился Вильгельм 

Майбах. Через год они создали свой первый одноцилиндровый 

двигатель, который мог использоваться для лодки или самоходной

The internal combustion 

engine invented in the 80-ies of the 

19th century enabled Gottlieb Daimler 

and Carl Benz – independently of each 

other – to lay the basis for the development 

of motor vehicles. 

In 1882 Gottlieb Daimler opened his 

own workshop in Cannstadt, later 

he was joined by Wilhelm Maybach. 

A year later they created their first 

one-cylinder engine, which could be 

used both for a boat or a self-propelled 

carriage. The engine was a real miracle, 

and in 1885 it was fixed to a two-wheel 

timber bike, which became the world’s 

first motor bike. A year later, the engine 

was attached to a boat, and later to a 

four-wheel carriage. So, the world’s 

first automobile with a gasoline engine 

looked very much like a usual horse carriage. 

It retained big timber wheels with 

steel hoop tires, a high front with a seat 

for a coachmen and a two-seat bench for 

passengers in the rear. The one-cylinder 

engine was placed vertically between 

the legs of passengers. With the capacity 

of 462 c sm, 1.1 h.p., the engine at 700 

RPM could drive rear wheels into movement 

with the help of a simple two-gear 

belt transmission. The car could go at 

the maximum speed of 16 km/hour. 

In his turn, in 1871 Karl Benz set up a 

firm in Mannheim to produce internal 

combustion engines. Several years later, 

his strenuous efforts crystallized into several 

patents for a two-beat engine. Unlike 

Daimler, who used an ordinary carriage to 

create his engine, Benz designed both the 

engine and the whole automobile. It had

Monsieur Mercedes (that was the name 

of one of his seven daughters). He did 

not make a good showing and lost his 

first race. But Jellinek continued training, 

which enabled him to adequately assess 

all advantages and disadvantages of his 

Daimler. When time came to buy a new 

car for the races, Elinek met the company 

chief engineer W.Maybach and suggested 

a number of changes, such as installing a 

four-cylinder engine, enhancing the car 

stability and suspension. Having obtained 

what he wished, Mr. Mercedes won 

a stunning victory at the races in Nice 

and made himself, the company and its 

car make world-famous. 

A year later Jellinek went to Kannstadt 

with new suggestions to upgrade the

использовалась как для снижения неравномерности работы 

механизма, кривошипного шатуна, так и для запуска двигателя.

with force. Karl Benz’s wife with their sons 

made in this car the longest trip in the 

automobile history – from Mannhein to 

Pforzheim – just to show how easy and 

comfortable was the journey. 

At first the inventors took their own 

surnames – Benz and Daimler – to guarantee 

the origin and good quality of their 

motor vehicles engines. TM Mercedes 

was coined only in 1900 in the following 

way. In the late 80-ies of the 19th century 

Austrian diplomat Emil Jellinek bought 

a Daimler car. After learning to drive it, 

he decided to take part in races. As he 

held an honorable post of the Austro- 

Hungarian consul in Nice, he decided 

to conceal his real name and took part 

in the races under the pseudonym of

Одессы, какие звезды осветили его интерьеры своим сиянием? • “Londonskaya Times” shall be the 

exact name given to the corporate periodical the Londonskaya Hotel is going to publish in December. Well, 

what kinds of times and years has the said hotel business lived through? What do the hotel’s employees and 

visitors remember about that? What nations were honored with their flags waiving at the flagpoles of this 

most famous hotel in the city of Odessa? And what celebrities used to visit the place in its long history?

cultural happenings held at this best 

hotel in Odessa. 

Still, the unique thing about this hotel 

is that it does not become very old and 

somewhat ‘dusted’ due to its famous past, 

like a monument at Primorsky Boulevard 

attended by numerous 'grateful visitors’ 

to worship it. No way, since Londonskaya 

remains the most popular hotel in Odessa 

today as well. 

It all began in 1826 when a beautiful mansion 

was built at 11 Bulvarnaya Street (now 

Primorsky Blvd.) in Odessa. The building 

was styled to fit the early Italian renaissance 

and the whole project was designed by Mr. 

Boffo. It turned out that the said hotel was 

built at the place where the ancient history 

of the city of Odessa began centuries ago. 

In the course of the construction work, they 

found a number of artifacts dating back to 

the times of the Istrian Harbor, the ancient 

predecessor of Odessa.

и славном прошлом она не бронзовеет, как памятник 

на Приморском бульваре, к которому приходят отдать дань

ренессанса. Сама судьба распорядилась так, что история будущего 

отеля началась на том месте, откуда метафорически начиналась 

история Одессы. Дело в том, что в ходе строительства 

здания были найдены артефакты времен существования 

античной предшественницы Одессы – Гавани Истриан. 

Одно только перечисление всех именитых гостей, 

останавливавшихся в «Лондонской», заняло бы немало 

места. Марчелло Мастрояни, Луи Арагон, бразильский 

император Дон Педро, Пауло Коэльо… Достаточно

A mere listing of all celebrities 

who have stayed at Londonskaya 

Hotel would just take a lot of space on 

paper. In particular, there were Marcello 

Mastroiani, Louis Aragon, Paulo Coelho, 

and Brazilian emperor Don Pedro… 

Suffice it to say that a search phrase 

“Londonskaya Hotel” would give you 

around 90,000 web links in, for instance, 

Yahoo.com. The said web resource would 

link you to such things as biographies of 

all those aforesaid as well as to some literary 

works where this hotel is described 

The hotel opened its doors for the visitors in 

April of 1846. The founder and first owner 

of the business was Mr. Jeanne-Batiste Caroutas, 

a famous French confectionery and 

gastronomy expert. The entire range of the 

French-like ‘patriotic’ names had already 

been taken and patented by other hotels 

in town at the said time, so Mr. Caroutas 

resorted to the British Isles to find a name 

for his hotel business, which eventually became 

Londonskaya. 

The Londonskaya Hotel looked quite 

impressive in the old-time advertisements 

of the 19th century as there were electric 

lighting, elevator, baths and showers, 

and a top-class restaurant where superb 

meals could be served. Furthermore, 

a stagecoach would take the visitors to 

the hotel from the local train station and 

the personnel were able to speak several

and first president of the independent Finland, 

have stayed as he was a Russian army 

officer back then?

составляли тогда от 1 до 25 рублей…

whereby an important role is played by all 

those celebrities who stayed here as they 

came to Odessa. Indeed, why shouldn't 

you afford the same level of service as all 

those famous artists, writers, painters, and 

presidents used to do? Finally, where else 

could Gustav Mannerheim, the founder 

As years go by, the list of such renowned 

people becomes even longer same as the 

number of portraits at the hallways of 

Londonskaya; there are numerous celebrities 

of the world culture who used to spend 

time at the hotel rooms. We may even talk 

about a kind of dynastical tradition as far 

as some famous visitors are concerned. 

For example, let us take this summertime 

when the hotel welcomed John Simenon; 

yes, the son of the famous detective stories 

writer George Simenon, the 'father' 

of Commissioner Megrait. The younger 

Simenon came to Odessa to visit the local 

places where his famous father stayed 

back then. No wonder that John chose the 

same hotel where the world-famous detective 

stories writer was staying with his 

pretty wife in 1933. John was very positive 

about the hotel and its staff and he also 

got to like the city of Odessa and its inhabitants. 

What's more, his visit also made 

it possible to find out in what room the 

famous French writer lived in 1933. The 

fact was that John brought some photographs 

from this family archive and those 

photos helped in solving the task. This 

is an example of how both the hotel and 

its visitors become somewhat enriched…

церкви относят ко времени основания 

Харькова. Ее несколько раз перестраивали, 

а в1887 г. было решено построить новую 

церковь рядом с прежней. Силуэт нового храма 

напоминает готические соборы, его фасады 

обработаны наподобие византийских построек 

горизонтальными полосами кирпичной кладки, 

чередующимися с оштукатуренными поясами. 

В центральной апсиде помещается главный 

алтарь с иконостасом из белого каррарского 

мрамора, украшенный византийским орнаментом 

и позолотой. 

The Annunciation Cathedral 

in the city of Kharkiv 

The construction of the first Annunciation Church 

is normally associated with the time the city of 

Kharkiv was founded. The said temple had been 

rebuilt many times until it was decided to erect 

another church just next to the existent one in 

1887. The shape of the new shrine resembles 

gothic cathedrals and its facades have been made 

similar to the Byzantine buildings girdled about 

with brickworks and plastered belts. The temple’s 

central exedra houses the main altar with the 

iconostasis made of Carrara marble decorated with 

Byzantine ornaments and gildings.

Before coming to Kiev in the 

early days of the 20th century, 

the 'Infanta' had possibly been a 

crown jewel of Alcazar as it remained the 

property of Prince Sebastian of Spain until 

1891. Later, the famous painting became 

part of the collection owned by Weber, 

an antiques dealer in Hamburg, Germany. 

Finally, as Mr. Weber’s collection was sold 

out in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th 

century, the Ukrainian collector and arts 

patron Bogdan Hanenko purchased the 

painting and brought it to Kiev. 

Margarita, the girl portrayed by Diego 

Velázquez, was the daughter of the Spanish 

king Phillip IV and his second wife 

Marianna of Austria. Nowadays we can 

only speculate whether that fair-haired 

girl really was so beautiful or the mastermind 

of Velázquez has just made it look 

this way at the painting. In fact, Margarita 

was portrayed many times as she grew 

up and Velázquez himself painted her 

several times, too, since it was the duty of 

the court artist and royal painter to keep 

record of the public and private life of the 

king and of the royal family, showing them 

at various periods of their lifetime and 

compiling a kind of ‘portrayed chronicle’.

The portraits of royal children were a sort 

of documents to witness the exclusive 

rank of all those princess and princesses. 

Such artworks decorated the walls of 

royal palaces and it was a must for the 

royal parents to send them out to other 

monarchs they expected to become their 

dynastic partners. Furthermore, copies 

of such portraits were oftentimes ordered 

by high-ranked officials and the nobility. 

Long story short, such paintings were of 

great importance to the court. 

The major purpose of portraying the 

members of the royal family was to glorify 

the king and to promote the idea of their 

semi-divine nature. It was the reign of the 

baroque style and the painters of the time 

used a wide range of tools to achieve that 

goal. Most of the baroque artists would add 

some allegoric images and details to their 

paintings, such as the scenes where their 

patron monarchs are crowned by angels. 

Diego Velázquez invented his own method 

to portray human faces; the ‘semi-divine’ 

nature of the royal family was shown due 

to particularly facile strokes of his pencil 

and translucent shades the spectator 

could hardly see. If you look closely at the 

painting, you can see that Margarita’s face 

is kind of illuminated from inside, but 

it still retains the typical infant vivacity 

and sincere nature. This painting method 

promoted Velázquez at the royal court in 

Madrid where he was introduced at rather 

young age. King Phillip IV favored Diego 

Velázquez personally and appointed him to 

the quite honorable post of the ‘royal bedroom 

guard’ at the court, and that made it 

possible for the painter to live quite well the 

way he wanted and, importantly, to freely 

work and try out new painting techniques.

Смысловой задачей всех изображений членов королевской 

семьи было прославление короля и поддержание идеи о его 

полубожественной сущности. Художники господствовавшей 

тогда эпохи барокко по-разному справлялись с этой 

задачей, по большей части добавляя аллегорические образы 

и детали, такие как, например, картины с сюжетом

можно увидеть, что личико юной принцессы на портрете 

будто бы светится изнутри, но в то же время оно не лишено 

детской живости и непосредственности. Эта находка способствовала 

быстрому продвижению художника при Мадридском 

дворе, куда он попал в довольно юном возрасте. 

Сам король Филипп симпатизировал художнику, и в итоге 

Веласкес занял довольно почетную должность «постельничего» 

– хранителя ключей королевской опочивальни – при 

дворе, что позволяло живописцу жить безбедно и, кроме 

того, давало ему творческую свободу и возможность экспериментировать. 

Итак, Богдан Ханенко привез «Инфанту» в Киев. Это изображение 

принцессы, по мнению искусствоведов, является подготовительной 

работой к парадному портрету Маргариты во 

весь рост, который в настоящее время хранится в музее «Прадо» 

в Италии. А здесь, в Киеве, портрет девочки-принцессы 

вместе со всей бесценной коллекцией, собранной Богданом 

Ивановичем и его женой Варварой Николаевной, перешел 

в собственность музея, устроенного в их доме по улице Терещенковской. 

Чета Ханенко даже придумала способ финансирования 

его после их смерти: рядом был выстроен доходный 

дом, и прибыль от сдачи квартир внаем должна была поддерживать 

музей. Во время бурных и смутных событий в Украине 

начала ХХ века стараниями Варвары Николаевны коллекцию 

удалось сохранить. 

Благодаря этому и сегодня мы можем заглянуть в ясные 

глаза жившей когда-то давно испанской инфанты, так и не 

успевшей насладиться жизнью сполна. В юные годы она 

была выдана замуж за императора Леопольда Габсбурга из 

Вены и в возрасте примерно 21 года умерла, истощенная 

многочисленными родами. Теперь только портрет работы 

великого мастера хранит воспоминания о безвозвратно 

ушедших временах.

Finally, Bogdan Hanenko brought the 'Infanta' 

to Kiev. According to the art experts, 

the said picture is a preparatory step to the 

full-scale portrait of Princess Margarita, 

which is nowadays kept at Prado Museum 

in Italy. Here in Kiev, the portrait of the 

young princess, along with the entire 

priceless collection of artworks Bogdan 

and Barbara Hanenko were gathering 

for many years, had become property of 

the arts museum they established at their 

house in Tereshchenkivska Street. The 

Hanenkos had even invented a special 

way to raise funds for their arts museum 

after the spouses pass away; an apartment 

building was erected just next door to the 

museum and the rent collected from the 

dwellers was used to support the museum 

financially. Later on, Mrs. Hanenko made 

great efforts to save the artworks collection 

at the time of rigorous political events 

that shook the Ukraine at the dawn of the 

20th century. This is exactly why we still 

can look at the eyes of the young Spanish 

girl who lived centuries ago and passed 

away as she was quite young. The fact is 

that Margarita became wife of Emperor 

Leopold Habsburg of Vienna and died at 

the age of twenty-one as she was physically 

exhausted by her numerous childbirths. 

At present, the painting by the great 

master is the only record of the years that 

passed and can never come back.

the process of its creation unsurpassed 

skills and talent interlaced with big love 

and tenderness. In 1811, in Epernay, 

the center of the Champagne province, 

Pierre-Nicole Perrier, who came from

then a symbol of refinement and 

a business card of the House. 

Having introduced a new type 

of champagne Belle Epoque, the 

wine house Perrier-Jouet has again 

amazed the connoisseurs. When the 

chief wine-maker of the house Erve 

Dechan creates a wine bouquet, he 

caters to the needs and tastes of a 

person, who would buy the wine 

into his or her collection. The 

exclusiveness of taste is attained 

through blending of various 

harvests of different years from 

various regions of the Champagne

кюве Belle Epoque Blanc de Blanc 2000 года (заметим,

a family of hereditary wine-producers, met Adele Jouet and fell 

in love with her. And this can be called the first anniversary 

of a special style and aesthetics of the future remarkable wine. 

In the year of marriage of Pierre and Adele a comet fell from 

the sky of Champagne, and everybody considered it to be a 

good sign and harbinger of an exclusive wine harvest. Out of 

that harvest Perrier-Jouet created the champagne, which made 

famous their name. 

Perrier-Jouet’s taste is incomparable. The wine also stands out 

by the design of its bottle, which was made by a great painter, in 

1902, in belle époque or ‘silver century’, as it was called by the poets. 

The master who created the bottle was the great painter Emile 

Galle. He was considered an expert of language of colours and 

he was the first to paint a picture on the bottle and then to make 

an engraving on it. The patterns on the bottle consisted of white 

anemones and gold roses. The flower champagne was named after 

that époque: Belle Epoque. 

Then the wine house Perrier-Jouet took the design of anemones 

and roses as its emblem. The flower champagne became incredibly 

popular. It was much admired and wondered at. Poems 

were written in its honour. Igor Severianin wrote: “Sparkling 

murmuring wine, raptured by the glass of flower”. A bottle with

вино. И время может остановиться, застыть на мгновения, 

которые, тем не менее, следуют одно за другим, составляя минуты, 

дни, годы, эпоху…

ряженные в яркие костюмы, с обязательной звездой 

на шесте, с песнями и колядками обходят дворы в селах, 

устраивают представления на площадях городков и даже 

совершают походы по горным серпантинам, где, кажется, 

даже передвигаясь на машине, еще долго не встретишь никакого 

жилья. 

История таких музыкальных представлений началась с изображения 

собственно рождественских яслей, где родился младенец 

Иисус. Со временем неподвижные герои ожили – и сценки 

на библейские сюжеты стали вертепом в том виде, в котором 

он известен нам. Есть он и у итальянцев, и у французов, и у греков. 

В Беларуси его называют «батлейкой», в Венгрии – «бетлегемом», 

в Румынии – «вуклеемом», в Польше – «шопкой» или

of adults and children dressed in vivid 

costumes bear stars at long sticks above 

theirs heads, sing traditional Christmas 

songs, and let out some friendly jokes 

up to the point. These people usually 

go around a village from one house to 

another, make theatrical performances 

at town squares, and can even walk miles 

in snow from one place to another to 

show the vertep to various people. 

The history of such musical performances 

began with the custom to depict 

the Christmas cradle where the baby 

Christ was born. As time went on, the 

‘static’ characters became ‘alive’ and 

the scenes showing the biblical 

stories became the vertep 

as we know it nowadays.

Russia & Romania. A typical Christmas 

theater or vertep is usually a small plywood 

box decorated with golden paper 

and brightly-colored pictures in popular 

style and traveling around together with 

the Christmas-tale kings. The masquers 

would normally tow such a vertep box 

in a sledge as they were walking from 

one household to another showing 

their Christmas scenes. In Ukraine, the 

students of local religious schools or collegiums 

were the first performers at such 

festive events followed by popular musicians 

at some later time. Furthermore, the 

so-called ‘live vertep’ was also invented, 

with live actors performing instead of 

puppets. Actually, the latter is exactly the 

way we can see the vertep events today 

in Lviv or Transcarpathia regions. .

вертепный ящик на санках от дома к дому и показывали 

свои представления. В Украине с вертепом ходили бурсаки – 

ученики братских школ-коллегиумов, а позже им увлеклись 

музыканты. Появился еще и «живой» вертеп с актерами вместо 

кукол. Собственно, в таком виде его и можно увидеть сегодня, 

отправившись на каникулы в Закарпатье или Львов. 

Основной сюжет народной драмы таков: узнав от волхвов о том, 

что в Вифлееме родился истинный царь иудейский – Иисус Христос, 

царь Ирод решил избавиться от божественного соперника. 

Но, не зная, в каком доме родился сын божий, «...послал избить 

всех младенцев в Вифлееме и во всех пределах его, от двух лет и 

ниже, по времени, которое выведал от волхвов». Иосиф же с женой 

Марией и младенцем бежали в Египет и вернулись в Иудею 

лишь после смерти Ирода. Конечно, в народном исполнении 

драма приобретает некие черты фарса, добродетель неминуемо 

торжествует, а порок всегда бывает наказан. К тому же это зрелище 

– будь то в Италии, Румынии, Польше или Украине – всегда 

The main plot of the public drama can 

be told as follows. As Herod the king of 

Judaea learnt from the Magi that Jesus 

Christ, the true king of Judaea, was born 

in Bethlehem, he decided to get rid of his 

divine opponent. But Herod did not know 

where exactly, in which of the Bethlehem 

houses, the God’s son was born, so he “… 

sent his men to kill all of the babies in 

Bethlehem and around the town at the age 

of two years and younger as Herod could 

judge from the time he got to know from 

the Magi”. Josef and his wife Marry with 

their child Jesus fled to Egypt by that time 

and returned to Judaea only after king 

Herod died. Surely, the folk-style performance 

makes those dramatic scenes look 

somewhat farcical where the good things 

and people always prevail over the bad 

ones. Moreover, such folk-style performance 

always reveals some vivid national 

features and characters, be it in Italy, Romania, 

Poland or Ukraine. The improvised 

details of the lifestyles of ordinary people, 

big bosses, tricky hucksters, policemen, 

and warriors bring some fancy ball spree 

into the traditional plot of the story. 

So, who takes part in such Christmas 

fairytales? Let us try to find out who is 

who there; dressed in their vividly-colored 

costumes and disguised by the characters 

they show. Still, we should not forget to say 

that the performers and their audience are 

free to imagine on their own, too. 

Persian Kings. These characters have 

bright crowns on their heads, shoulder 

straps, and beautiful croziers. They come 

to give their respect and honor to baby 

Jesus and they can also carry the box with 

the cradle and puppets. 

The Magi alias the Shepherds. Actually, 

they come for the same reason as the

Персидские Цари. У них шикарные бумажные короны на 

голове, погоны на плечах и нарядные посохи. Они приходят 

поклониться младенцу Иисусу и могут носить ящик с яслями 

и куклами. 

Волхвы (Пастухи). Приходят, в общем, по тому же поводу, 

что и Цари, их поклонение сопровождается колядками. 

Ангелы. Возвещают «великую новость» о рождении Христа, 

иногда они же вводят зрителей в курс дела, объясняя, о чем 

пойдет речь в представлении. 

Царь Ирод. Зловещая фигура. Носит алую накидку, появляется 

разгневанным новостью о рождении нового царя, недальновиден, 

склочен и зол, за что в конце пьесы попадает в ад. 

Пророк. Бесконечно мудр, его 

можно узнать по книге в руках, он 

предупреждает Ирода о каре, если 

тот не одумается. 

Смерть с косой. Появляется в конце, 

чтобы забрать жизнь у злобного 

царя Ирода в наказание за приказ 

убить младенцев. Обычно лихо 

сносит ему голову. 

Черт. Является, чтобы забрать 

душу Ирода в пекло. Его отличительная 

особенность – рога. Носит 

с собой вилы, которыми убедительно 

заталкивает царя куда нужно. 

Дед и Баба. Комическая парочка,

Jesus is usually accompanied by Christmas 

carols. 

Angels. They herald the “great news” 

about the birth of Jesus and sometimes 

they also tell the audience what such 

Christmas show is about. 

King Herod. This is a sinister person 

wearing a crimson cloak. Herod gets 

mad as he learns that the new king, 

Jesus, is born in Judaea. King Herod is 

short-sighted, quarrelsome, and vicious, 

and for that reason he is brought to hell 

in the end of the show. 

Prophet. This man is extremely wise and 

clever, and you can recognize him by the 

book he holds in his hands. The Prophet 

warns Herod about the retribution he 

will get if he does not change his vicious 

ways of thinking and doing. 

The Scythe-Carrying Death. This figure 

enters in the end of the performance to 

take the life of the vicious king Herod in 

order to punish him for his order to kill 

the babies in Bethlehem. The Scythe- 

Carrying Death usually kills Herod by 

cutting his head off with the scythe it 

carries. 

The Deuce. This one comes to take 

Herod’s soul to hell. The distinctive feature 

of the Deuce is horns and he has a 

pitchfork he uses to kick the hell-bound 

Herod to where the one belongs now. 

Old Man and Old Woman. These two 

are a comical family couple. They dance 

and sing simultaneously to show that the 

evil is punished now and there is nothing 

to be afraid of. 

Witch alias Nun. She sings a song telling 

the audience that she travels from one

Цыган и Цыганка. Ссорятся, мирятся, жалуются на бедность, 

но, в итоге, все заканчивается миром и, как в индийском 

кино, всеобщей пляской. 

Дьячок. Говорит на малопонятном церковном языке, вся семинарская 

ученость в его лице осмеяна, берет у крестьянина 

вместо оплаты за обучение сына свинью и очень этим доволен, 

но оказывается, что ему подложили «свинью»: животное 

старое, блудливое и как товар неликвидное вовсе. 

Коза. Это персонаж из другого святочного обряда, где ряженые 

водили козу на продажу, но и тут коза хороша: она пляшет 

и поет, а ее появление в доме сулит хозяевам плодородие. 

Одним словом, эти или другие герои станут ближе и понятнее, 

когда увидишь все собственными глазами. Святочные 

обряды, песни, представления – это целый мир, и когда 

попадаешь в него, хочется подпевать, сопереживать и пританцовывать 

в такт колядкам. Как бы ни исполнялся современный 

вертеп, его участники достойны похвалы и награды 

щедрых хозяев за веселые коляды, пожелания счастья, 

добра и мира. А что может быть лучше таких пожеланий на 

Рождество… 

village to another to ‘bewitch’ cows and 

to make them produce butter instead of 

milk and that she does not fear anyone at 

all. The further destiny of this Witch/Nun 

is quite mysterious; she does not share 

the butter she makes with anyone and 

gets into hiding once she hears somebody 

coming close to her. 

Gypsy Man and Gypsy Woman. These 

two first quarrel and then reconcile 

with one another, then say that life 

turns out so hard to them as they are 

poor people, but finally things end up 

happily for them and the entire story 

comes to the finale where all of the 

characters sing and dance altogether 

like in Indian movies. 

Deacon. This person talks the traditional 

clerical language ordinary people can 

hardly understand; a feature intended to 

make fun of his entire religious school 

wisdom. The Deacon takes a pig from 

a peasant as payment for his teaching 

of the peasant’s son and becomes very 

glad with such payment, but it eventually 

turns out that it was a mean trick 

on him because the pig he got is old and 

lecherous which makes it a quite unreliable 

asset. 

Nanny Goat. This character originally 

comes from a different Christmas tradition 

whereby the masquers would usually 

bring a goat to sell it to somebody. Still, 

the Nanny Goat is a quite good one in 

our case, too; she can dance and sing. 

Moreover, her arrival means good fertility 

for the owners of the home she visits. 

Long story short, these and some other 

characters will become closer and more 

understandable if you see the whole 

thing with your own eyes. The traditional 

Christmas carols, stage performances, 

features, and popular songs create an 

entire world on their own that ignites you 

to take an active part in the festivity, to 

dance and sing with the others. No matter 

what kind of vertep is performed nowadays, 

the performers do deserve rewards 

and cheers from the home owners for 

whom they stage their show. The vertep 

actors perform popular Christmas carols 

and songs and tell their wishes of happiness, 

well-being, and peace to the home 

they visit, so what kind of Christmas gift 

can be better than that, indeed?

— Mr. Leffler, it has been eight months since 

you came to the Ukraine. What have you 

managed to learn about our country since 

you came here? 

— Господин Леффлер, Вы в Украине уже семь месяцев. Что 

Вам удалось узнать о нашей стране за это время? 

Род Леффлер: Каждые выходные мы с женой стараемся выбираться 

куда-нибудь в центр. Нам очень нравятся Крещатик, 

особенно вечером, улица Владимирская с ее удивительной 

архитектурой… И еще эта ваша замечательная улица с сувенирами 

[Андреевский спуск. – Прим. редактора]: почти каждый уик-энд 

мы выделяем несколько часов, чтобы просто посидеть там в 

маленьком кафе. Кстати, я заметил, что еда в Киеве во многих 

местах вкусная, чего, к сожалению, не скажешь о сервисе. 

— Он тоже должен быть «вкусным»? 

Род Леффлер: Сервис просто должен быть. Особенно, если 

ресторан хочет завоевать постоянных посетителей. Чтобы 

побуждать человека вновь и вновь приходить в твое заведение 

и оставлять там деньги, одной программы лояльности 

недостаточно. А посетители нашего уровня всегда требовательны 

не только к еде, но и к обслуживанию. 

— Господин Роддерих, расскажите о концепции нового ресторана. 

Род Леффлер: В разных странах такие заведения называют 

по-разному – гастрономический ресторан, ресторан высокой 

кухни… Но все это термины. Главное – безупречный 

с точки зрения еды и обслуживания ресторан. По кухне 

«Терракота» будет наиболее близка Средиземноморью, 

при этом не только привычной «связке» Франция-Италия. 

В меню будут и испанские, и греческие блюда, и даже шишкебаб! 

Наша идея – представить кухню «колыбели» человеческой 

цивилизации. Отсюда и название, ведь изделия из 

терракоты были у всех народов, населявших берега этого 

теплого моря. 

— Что необычного будет в новом ресторане? 

Род Леффлер: Винная и сигарная комнаты. Уверен, что ценители 

хороших вин и сигар не откажутся от их посещения. 

И в то же время какие-то вещи остались неизменными, мы 

просто подчеркнули их преимущества, ведь окна теперь 

практически заменили стены. Раньше наши гости любили 

завтракать, наслаждаясь солнцем и видами Киева. Теперь 

же от открывающейся панорамы и вовсе захватывает дух: 

утром это крыши домов старого города в лучах солнечного 

света, а вечером из-за обилия огней возникает иллюзия «парения 

над городом».

— Говорят, в «Терракоте» будут серебряные 

приборы? 

Род Леффлер: Да, но это отнюдь не ново 

для ресторанов такого уровня. Вот подготовка 

персонала, качество продуктов 

– другое дело… Это важнее серебряных 

ложек и вилок. 

R.L.: I try to go out somewhere in the city 

center each weekend with my wife. We like 

the Kreshchatik very much, especially at 

nighttime; and Vladimirska Street with its 

wonderful buildings; and that your nice street 

where souvenirs are sold [Andreyevskiy Spusk – Editorial 

notice]. We usually spend a few hours at 

a small café down there, and all. You know, 

I have noticed that they cook very good meals 

in many places in Kyiv, though the level of 

service remains quite poor, unfortunately. 

— Do you mean that the service should kind 

of “delicious” as well? 

R.L.: There should be just good service in 

general, especially if restaurant owners want 

to attract regular customers. If you want people 

to come to your place and spend their 

money down there over and over again, a 

mere discounted price is just not enough. 

In fact, restaurant visitors like us are always 

quite exacting not only about meals, but also 

about the servicing we are offered. 

— Mr. Roderick, would you please briefly tell 

us about the concept of your new restaurant? 

R.L.: A lot of names and terms are associated 

with such kind of public catering business; a gastronomical 

restaurant, a fine dining place, etc. 

Actually, no matter how you call it, for the main 

thing is that such restaurant should be perfect both in terms of meals 

and servicing. As far as the planned meals are concerned, this Terracotta 

restaurant will offer a rather wide choice of Mediterranean meals, not 

just linked to that typical combination of France and Italy. We are going 

to cook Spanish and Greek meals and even shish-kebab! We have 

chosen Terracotta as the restaurant’s name since our intention is to represent 

the entire range of the meals typically cooked by all those nations 

that inhabited the shores of the warm Mediterranean for centuries. 

— What kind of unusual things will be there at Terracotta? 

R.L.: There will be a room for wine drinking and a cigar smoking 

room. I am sure that people keen on good wine and good cigars will 

be intrigued to visit them. At the same time, some details have remained 

unchanged; we have just emphasized the standard advantages 

of usual things. Previously, our visitors would love to have lunch 

as they were enjoying the sunlight and the city views of Kyiv, while 

the current panorama view is expected to take their breath away; the 

old town roofs in sunrays on mornings and the illusion of hovering 

above the city at nighttime when thousands of lights are on. 

— We were told that customers would be given silver flatware 

at Terracotta; is that true? 

R.L.: Yes, but this is not a new thing for the restaurants of the kind. The 

really crucial things are the personnel training and the food quality. 

It is much more important than those silver spoons and forks.

сумму, инвестированную в ресторан «Терракота»

значение. Персоналу новой «Терракоты» он также 

уделяет много внимания: всем, кто не сдаст экзамен после 

тренинга, не повезет… Однако Род не унывает: «У вас поразительные 

люди. Они неохотно идут на контакт с незнакомцами, 

но если проникаются к кому-то доверием, то готовы 

разделить с ним последнее. Они очень преданные». 

Мы также уверены в успехе нового проекта, но при этом 

позволим себе не согласиться с уважаемым мэтром только 

в одном: дизайн нового ресторана – это третья удивительная 

составляющая будущего успеха «Терракоты». А так ли это – 

покажет время.

} Personal Information 

Roderick Leffler was born in the South Bavaria, 

but was raised and grew up in the Middle East. 

He used to work for Hilton, Intercontinental, 

and Kempinski. Mr. Leffler was also honored to 

work at the Emirate Palace, one of the best hotel 

businesses in the Middle East, where he was in 

charge of opening a number of restaurants of 

different styles. The last of his previous employers 

was Kempinski Heilegedamm, the hotel where 

the G8 summit was held in 2006. 

Roderick Leffler knows very well what the term luxury means, and 

we hardly can dispute it. Despite the immense amount vested in the 

project [Around US$2,500,000 – Editorial notice], the man sticks to the idea 

that cooking skills and good servicing are the core things in such 

business, while the interior design is not very important. Mr. Leffler 

pays a lot of attention to the personnel of the new restaurant; all 

those who fail their final exam will be dismissed. Still, Rod remains 

enthusiastic about it, as he says “Your people have wonderful nature. 

They are not eager to easily get along with a guy they do not know; 

but once they have trust to someone, they can share their last piece 

of bread with such a person. They are very dedicated.” 

We also believe that the new restaurant will be a success. Still we 

would dispute with one thing about Mr. Leffler’s opinions; it is the 

interior design of the new restaurant. In our view, such design is 

another component of the future success of Terracotta. And only 

time will show if our view is right.

Традиция истопить баню, водой и паром обновить тело 

и успокоить душу уходит вглубь веков. Баня появилась 

почти сразу, как только человек научился использовать 

огонь и горячие камни для обогрева своего жилища. Наши 

предки любили повторять: «Где тепло, там и добро». У источников 

тепла грелись и принимали «банные процедуры» племена 

ацтеки и майя. Древние инки строили куполообразные 

паровые бани из глины и вулканического стекла. 

Геродот в своих трудах описывал скифские банные обычаи, 

существовавшие в Причерноморье. А летописец Нестор 

в «Повести временных лет» (IX в.) рассказывал о том, как на 

Руси в бревенчатых строениях обнаженные люди обливались 

квасом, били себя вениками и в заключение окатывались 

холодной водой. 

Традиционная славянская баня – деревянная изба с полатями 

и раскаленными камнями, на которые льют воду, чтобы

The tradition to take a bath, to rejuvenate your body, 

soothe the soul and calm the spirits goes back to the ancient, pre- 

Christian times. As soon as people learned how to warm up their 

dwellings with fire and warm stones, they immediately invented 

a bath. Our ancestors used to say: “If it is warm, then it is kind”. The 

sources of heat were used by the Aztec and Maya tribes for warming 

up and bathing. The ancient Inca built cupola-shaped steam 

baths out of clay and volcanic glass. 

Herodotus in his works described Scythian bathing traditions 

of the Black Sea area. Annalist Nestor in his “Tales of Bygone Years 

(The Russian Primary Chronicle is a history of Kievan Rus’, 9 century) 

wrote that in the ancient Russia naked people in wooden buildings 

would throw kvas (rye-bread beverage) and cold water on themselves, 

beating themselves and each other with switches of green birch twigs. 

Cold water would be used again at the end of the bathing procedure. 

The traditional Slavic bath-house is a wooden izba (log hut) 

with wooden planking (used for lying) and burning hot stones to 

pour water on them for steam-making has become wide-spread in 

Western Europe. There such a steaming bath was called a Finnish 

sauna, while in Eastern Europe its names were parnaya (steaming 

bath), laznya, lazenka, and, most frequently, a Russian bath. The 

main differences between the Western and Eastern bathing procedures 

lie in the type of walls, whether 

they are made of logs or smoothly 

squared, the degree of heat, the way 

of heating and level of humidity. 

There are still heated debates going 

on whether dry heat is better 

than the steam, whether it is 

good to use a switch of green 

birch twigs, and if it is, what 

is the best type of it. 

In the old Roman and 

Byzantine times Europe got

названия: «парная», «лазня», «лазенки», а чаще – «русская 

баня». Отличия есть, в основном они состоят в типе деревянных 

стен – бревенчатые или по-современному гладкие, разнице 

температур, способе нагрева и уровне влажности. До сих 

пор идет горячий спор о том, какая баня лучше – сухая или 

окутанная паром, чем хорош и каким должен быть веник. 

Еще с древнеримских и византийских времен в Европе получили 

широкое распространение восточные процедуры. Великого 

полководца Александра Македонского (336–323 гг. до н.э.) во 

время долгого военного похода поразили прекрасные египетские 

бани. И он повелел выстроить по всей Элладе такие же. 

Довольно любопытный вид восточных бань – хаммам (от 

арабского слова «хам» – жар). Он сочетает в себе известные купальные 

традиции с активной работой банщика-терщика. Во 

влажном паре на разогретых скамьях из мрамора или камня 

делается особый массаж, совмещенный с мануальной терапией. 

Затем банщик проводит ряд манипуляций, используя 

жесткую рукавицу для пилинга, а для мытья и массажа – намыленный 

полотняный пузырь. Процедура длительная и чрезвычайно 

приятная. Лучшее описание хаммама принадлежит 

русскому поэту А.С. Пушкину, который побывал в подобной 

бане: «Я… чувствовал … удивительное облегчение. Ощущение 

неизъяснимое: горячее мыло обливает вас, как воздух!». 

Восточные приемы часто дополняют типичные правила 

для всех саун и бань. Главное же – сделать банную процедуру 

не только приятной, но и полезной для здоровья. Необходимо, 

чтобы парная, сауна или баня снимали усталость, прогоняли 

хандру и хворь. Человек, посетивший баню, должен 

чувствовать себя отдохнувшим и бодрым. 

Потеть в сауне, бане или хаммаме надо неторопливо, постепенно 

увеличивая температуру. Еще считается, что чередовать 

парную и охлаждение (это может быть бассейн, купель 

или любой открытый водоем) следует не более трех раз. Во 

время принятия процедур воду лучше не пить. 

Чем же утолить жажду после бани? Только натуральными 

напитками умеренной температуры, такими как квас, узвар или 

компот. Можно выпить травяной или плодово-ягодный чай. 

А что касается прилива сил, его, будьте уверены, обеспечит 

сам процесс посещения бани. Особенно 

если сочетать полезное с приятным

и провести несколько дней на Южном 

берегу Крыма в отеле «Ореанда», где 

можно прочувствовать на себе воздействие 

всех видов бань и подышать свежим

of the Eastern type of bathing 

is hammam (from Arabic 

ham: heat), which blends together 

the well-known bathing 

techniques with the work 

of a bath-house attendant. 

In a humid steam on warm 

benches made of marble or 

stone he makes a special type of massage bordering on the manual 

therapy. First he makes a peeling using a tough sponge mitten, 

then he washes his client and makes a massage with a soapy 

linen bladder. The bathing procedure is rather lengthy and an 

extremely pleasant one. The best description of hammam belongs 

to the great Russian poet A.Pushkin, who wrote after having visited 

it: “I felt a great relief. You cannot describe the feeling: the 

hot soap is enveloping you like air!”. 

Eastern techniques often complement the typical rules for all types 

of sauna or bath. The most important thing is to make a bathing procedure 

both pleasant and good for your health. The steam bath, sauna 

or bath should relieve you of fatigue and drive away spleen and ailments. 

After visiting a bath you should feel fit as a fiddle. 

There should be no hurry while sweating in a sauna, steam bath 

or hammam, the degree of heat should rise gradually. Another important 

rule is that you should not alternate sweating and cooling 

(in a swimming pool or a pond) more than three times. During 

bathing it is better not to take water. 

Another important point is how to quench the thirst. You 

should take only natural beverages of moderate degree of temperature, 

such as kvas, uzvar or compote (Russian and Ukranian 

stewed fruit drinks). You may also take herbal or fruit tea... 

As for the energy levels, beyond all doubt, they will be much 

higher after visiting a bath-house. Especially, if you combine useful 

and pleasant things as you spend a few days at the Crimean 

South Coast at Oreanda Hotel where all kinds of baths will be 

accessible to you and where you can breathe fresh sea air till your

Колумб более 500 лет назад. Но – к чести кубинцев – и сегодня, 

спустя века, невзирая на разного рода политические 

и экономические катаклизмы, этот чудесный уголок земли 

не потерял своей красоты, молодости и дыхания древности 

одновременно. 

Трудно сказать, с чего начинается Куба: так много здесь 

сплетено – великолепная природа, наследие разных культур, 

эпох и влияний. Но, конечно, столица Гавана – сердце 

островного государства – один из красивейших городов 

мира. Она создавалась с начала ХVI века в жестокой борьбе, 

которую вел ее основатель Диего Веласкес с пиратами 

и прочими завоевателями. Поэтому, прогуливаясь по набережной, 

обвивающей город едва ли не кольцом, вы, 

в первую очередь, увидите старинные крепости и бастионы. 

А уж затем – многочисленные дворцы, соборы, музеи, 

мемориалы. Конечно, взгляд остановится на Национальном 

Капитолии, Кафедральном соборе, Дворце изящных 

искусств. Их и себя перед ними обязательно захочется запечатлеть 

на память. Недаром большинство прекрасных 

строений в этой стране занесено ЮНЕСКО в список мирового 

культурного наследия. 

Иностранцы на Кубе отдыхают преимущественно на курорте 

Варадеро и на островах, самые известные из которых – 

Кайо Ларго, Кайо Коко и Кайо Гильермо. На всех курортах 

отличный выбор водных развлечений, и при этом все здесь 

удивительно дешево. Например, прогулка на моторной яхте с 

ловлей барракуды и голубого марлина стоит всего 50 долларов 

– это за пять-шесть часов рыбалки. 

Очень много рассказывают о так называемом «мужском 

туризме» на Кубе. И действительно, на остров приезжает гораздо 

больше мужчин, чем женщин. Правда и то, что кубинки 

чрезвычайно страстные и темпераментные. Возможно, именно 

это привлекает на Кубу представителей сильного пола. Тем 

не менее, определение «проституция» не совсем подходит к 

тому, что происходит в действительности. Если мужчина 

понравился девушке, она может отказаться от денег. А если 

встречи повторяются, то самым точным определением таких 

отношений может быть слово «любовь».

luckily for us, this nice part of the Earth has preserved its beauty, 

juvenility, and touch of ancient years at the same time despite centuries 

of various political and economic hardships. 

It is quite difficult to say exactly what Cuba begins with, for so 

many things have been mixed up here; wonderful nature, multiple 

cultural heritage, and traces of numerous epochs and historical 

events. One thing for sure is that Havana, one of the most 

beautiful cities in the world, is the heart of this island country. 

This city was established in the early 16th century in the course 

of the rigorous struggle its founder, Diego Velázquez, carried out 

against marine pirates and other invaders. This is why the ancient 

fortresses and bastions will be the first things you can see while 

taking a walk around the seafront, which kind of embraces the 

city. Next things you see there will of course be the numerous palaces, 

cathedrals, museums, and memorials. The National Capitol, 

the Cathedral, and the Fine Arts Palace will certainly catch your

wonderful buildings have been listed by UNESCO as part of the 

world’s cultural heritage. 

Out of the Cuban resorts, foreigners prefer Varadero and some 

resort islands like Cayo Largo, Cayo Coco, and Cayo Guillermo. 

All of the Cuban resorts offer a wide choice of surprisingly cheap 

aquatic entertainments. For instance, a motorboat angling trip to 

catch barracuda and blue marlin would cost you just US$50,- for 

five to six hours. 

People may talk a lot about the so-called ‘male tourism’ in 

Cuba. It is true that more men than women usually come to this 

island country. It is also true that Cuban girls are extremely passionate 

and peppy, and this perhaps is the major reason why males 

come to Cuba en masse. However, the term ‘prostitution’ should 

not boldly be applied to what happens here in real life. The thing 

is that a girl may refuse to take money if she liked the man very 

much. In case they continue seeing each other, the most appropriate 

word for such relationship would be just ‘love’. 

Most of pretty Cuban maids either work or study at daytime. 

Still, the average local salary is extremely low and people can afford 

just a limited number of things and products the state provides 

under special coupons still used in Cuba. 

Nowadays, free circulation of the United States dollars is officially 

allowed within the country, so there is no need to exchange 

them for the domestic currency since you can use dollars 

nationwide. Sure, luxury stores are not found en masse in Cuba 

yet, but there are a number of European-style supermarkets in 

Havana where good products are sold at quite affordable price. 

Speaking about the Cuban souvenirs, we should by all means 

remember of cigars, local rum, products made of tortoiseshells, 

black corals and, of course, machetes. 

So, sunlight, seawaters, marvelous sand, and the chance to catch a 

marlin or a swordfish as Ernest Hemingway used to; all of these things 

we can find in Cuba. You can rent a car and cross the island running 

from Pinar-del-Rio towards the beaches of Guantanamo, and along 

your way you will meet many nice, friendly, and beautiful Cuban people 

who dance salsa, drink rum, and cook the lobsters they have just 

caught in the sea. Probably, these people can much stronger than others 

feel what freedom means, since it has been more than fifty years 

that there is only one Freedom Island on the globe; Cuba. 

It is hard to say goodbye to Cuba because real joy and true sadness 

can fill your heart simultaneously when you do. That is why 

many people dream of a new visit to this wonderful island once

как бы ни сложилась семейная жизнь, каким бы ни 

был брак – долгим и счастливым или наоборот, все 

равно этот день – самый счастливый в жизни молодоженов. 

Они стоят на пороге новой жизни, дают важные клятвы 

и, глядя друг другу в глаза, официально и вслух говорят 

целому миру о своих чувствах. Это – праздник двух сердец, 

и он должен быть идеальным. 

В свадебной церемонии переплелись давние традиции. Это языческие 

и христианские обычаи, обряды, которые, по поверьям, 

приносят счастье и удачу, и такие исконно украинские церемонии, 

как ступать «на рушник» или угощать друг друга караваем. 

Некоторые традиции пришли к нам из Европы и Америки, прижились 

здесь, и благодаря ним наши украинские свадьбы стали 

еще красивее. Например, свадебный торт с фигурками на верхушке. 

А вот еще одна новинка – на свадьбу арендуется отель:

have been mixed in a wedding ceremony. 

There are some heathen rites 

and Christian customs widely believed 

to bring happiness and good 

luck to the spouses, such as the old 

Ukrainian tradition of joint stepping 

onto a special wedding towel 

or feeding a few pieces of wedding 

cake to one another. Some of those 

customs came to our land from the 

West Europe and America and became 

kind of localized by our nation, 

having thus made the Ukrainian 

wedding ceremony even more 

beautiful. Take a wedding cake 

topped by the figures of a fiancé and a bride, for instance. 

Yet another novelty is a wedding event whereby hotel premises 

are leased; people are having good time, singing and dancing altogether 

at a hotel’s restaurant or concert hall, and then guests stay at 

hotel rooms till next day while the newlyweds spend their wedding 

night at a beautifully furnished hotel suite, and this unusual place 

makes their wedding night a real mystery. 

Such new trend is gradually becoming a common thing for a wedding 

in Ukraine, especially when fiancé comes from the West Europe 

or America. Hotels prepare their “wedding offers” for newlyweds, such 

as discounted pricing, various gifts, and specially furnished rooms with 

tent-beds. This is the way the offer called First Night was developed by 

Aurora Hotel in Kharkiv. The place is offering hotel stay discounts, gifts, 

traditional champagne, fruits, and bedroom 

lunch to newlyweds, and has therefore became 

a wedding hit in 2008. Since the month of July, 

there are following romantic stats at Aurora: 

P Fifty-four First Nights; 

P Seven engagement ceremonies; 

P One marriage registration carried out 

right at the hotel’s restaurant; 

P One ‘repeated wedding’ ceremony; 

P Two wedding anniversaries; and 

P More than thirty wedding banquettes and 

even several “weddings just for two” 

A romantically furnished suite at a beautiful 

hotel may become a nice gift to newlyweds 

from their friends or even to a bride from her 

fiancé. Because a wedding night is a symbol 

of love and faithfulness and is also the first 

page in the joint life of a married couple.
