Creating animated pictures is much more complicated because multiple files are needed to create a single
animated visual stimulus. In order to produce movement, we need many images created in Adobe
Photoshop. We then layer those images in Adobe Flash to create movement. The following is a picture of
all the files needed for one animated picture.
When creating visual stimuli for our research, we need to control for confounding variables.
Pictures should have only components that must be present for it to be an accurate representation of the
schema. Furthermore, each component in a scene should remain the same when placed in another visual
stimulus. For example, once the location “courthouse” is created, it should appear the same in each visual
stimulus that has a “courthouse”. Each participant will only see a component of a visual stimulus one time,
but using separate depictions of a component would create a confound. The following visual stimuli are
