example, Asians were perceived as passive, non-aggressives, and easily outmaneuvered by competitors in the business world. McDonnell-Douglas Corporation, one design and aircraft manufacturer for the US Air Force, even blamed the lower national defense budget after the fall of the Soviet Union. The combination of these created the glass ceiling and the need for the 1991 Civil Rights legislation and the Glass Ceiling Commission. Also, in 1993, the National Association for Urban Bankers was created to eliminate the glass ceiling for African Americans in the banking industry. Slowly but surely, the glass ceiling started to disappear. America has made progress towards eliminating this Glass Ceiling. Compared to the 5% of 1995, women in 2010 make up approximately 14% of senior manager positions in Fortune 1000 and 500 companies, and 3% of Fortune 500 companies have women CEO‟s. Women also make up about 16% of board seats for Fortune 500 companies in 2010. For regular managerial positions, women now make up about 40% of them, compared to the 10% of 1990. H&R Block, Limited Brands, TIAA-CREF, and Western Union now have about 50% women in their executive suit. As the data shows, the glass ceiling problem is still not solved. Nevertheless, percentage increases of women in high positions show remarkable progress in a short time span. Certain individuals have broken the glass ceiling. Katherine Bigelow won two Academy Awards for her film, “The Hurt Locker,” shattering stereotypes of what kinds of movies women can direct. Sarah Palin ran as Vice President for the Republican Party in the 2008 election. The CEO and Chairman of Kraft Foods, Inc., Irene Rosenfeld, is a woman. Four members of the President‟s Cabinet are women. One of the Supreme Court Justices, Sonia Sotomayor, is a Hispanic woman - a double win for the destruction of the glass ceiling. Nancy Pelosi was the Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011. Women and minorities struggled for years to achieve any kind of equality in the US in many social institutions. Even with the advancement of women and minorities through legislation-based equality and the change in the mindset of the people, not much was actually changing in the early „90‟s. Today, almost 37
20 years after the Glass Ceiling Commission was originally created, even though remnants of the glass ceiling are still here, equality is almost here and the glass ceiling is almost gone.
