APPENDIX 4 – HAZARDOUS SPILL MANAGEMENT<br />

‣ Discard all <strong>of</strong> the contaminated material in a thick plastic bag marked “Cytotoxic”. Remove the gown, face<br />

protection and outer pair <strong>of</strong> gloves (being careful to avoid self-contamination) and place them in the plastic<br />

bag.<br />

‣ Wearing the inner pair <strong>of</strong> gloves, close the bag and place it in another plastic bag. Remove the inner pair <strong>of</strong><br />

gloves and the disposable respirator and place them in the bag before closing it. Dispose <strong>of</strong> the bag with the<br />

cytotoxic waste. If a powered respirator was used, it must be placed in a separate bag for future cleaning.<br />

‣ Wash your hands with soap and water.<br />

‣ Once the spill has been cleaned up, ask the Hygiene and Sanitation Department to clean the area.<br />

‣ Complete a Spill Report Form (see sample). The Chemical Spill Report Form may also be used.<br />

4.2.2 Spill Inside a Hood<br />

‣ Immediately clean up any small spills (less than 30 mL) inside a hood.<br />

‣ Use a spill kit if the spill is larger than 30 mL or if the contents <strong>of</strong> an ampoule or vial are involved. It should be<br />

noted that, in general, the workers on the scene are already protected by their personal protective equipment.<br />

‣ Use the thick gloves contained in the kit to collect the glass shards. Place them in the rigid container in the<br />

hood.<br />

‣ Clean and decontaminate the hood before using it again.<br />

‣ Clean the drain placed under the grille <strong>of</strong> the hood if the spill reached it.<br />

‣ If liquid has penetrated the HEPA filter or if the “clean” side <strong>of</strong> the filter was contaminated by powder<br />

particles, stop using the hood until it has been decontaminated and the filter replaced.<br />
