3.2.3 DCM Approaches within MANDIE<br />

From our point of view, <strong>the</strong> MANDIE partners’<br />

approaches may be divided into two groups:<br />

DCM schemes that pursue a holistic regeneration<br />

approach <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire district<br />

(e.g. Frankfurt-Höchst, Hagen-Wehringhausen,<br />

Eindhoven-Doornakkers). Besides <strong>the</strong><br />

promotion of economic development,<br />

questions of mix of land uses, local housing<br />

offer and housing environment, public<br />

squares, traffic regulation, and <strong>the</strong> development<br />

and redevelopment key sites are<br />

C – <strong>Centre</strong>s of centrally planned urban extensions<br />

from <strong>the</strong> 1940s to 1960s (Stuttgart-<br />

Giebel, Eindhoven-Doornakkers). In <strong>the</strong>se<br />

postwar suburban estates, housing in rows or<br />

large blocks of buildings prevails. Shops are<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r centrally planned as rows of small shops<br />

or scattered among <strong>the</strong> district. Often, a centre<br />

cannot be perceived and <strong>the</strong>re is a lack of public<br />

facilities, modern retail and public squares.<br />
