The subject of district centre management is<br />

already part of <strong>the</strong> existing courses of <strong>the</strong><br />

study modules or can easily be integrated<br />

(see picture and table below). One main focus<br />

is <strong>the</strong> study project on urban regeneration<br />

where fundamental knowledge is applied in<br />

cooperation with municipalities and local<br />

stakeholders. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, more specific<br />

elective courses were developed in order to<br />

allow a specialisation in <strong>District</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> Management.<br />

4.2.3 Courses Taught (Structure, Content, Participants, Feedback)<br />

Learning Objectives<br />

In order to qualify <strong>the</strong> planning graduates <strong>for</strong><br />

working in <strong>the</strong> field of district centre management,<br />

<strong>the</strong> courses focus on<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>ring knowledge on <strong>the</strong> complex interrelation<br />

between urban development, political<br />

goals and local economic interests<br />

analyzing typical processes of development<br />

in district centres in Northwest Europe<br />

developing district development plans<br />

creating design plans <strong>for</strong> public space and<br />

building structures<br />

Training Concept <strong>District</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> Management <strong>for</strong> Students of<br />

Public Administration, Urban Planning and Economics<br />

steering and moderating complex processes<br />

in interdisciplinary teams<br />

developing management and planning<br />

strategies <strong>for</strong> districts and<br />

negotiating <strong>the</strong> interests of different stakeholders<br />

and local inhabitants.<br />

Between 2009 and 2011, seven courses have<br />

been taught that focused on district centres.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, four master <strong>the</strong>ses on centre development<br />

have been accomplished. Altoge<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

118 students participated in courses on<br />

district centre management.<br />
