Block and Tackle
One pulley can be used to change the
direction of the force applied by a cord.
A small force on the cord can be use to
lift a large weight. Experimenting with
the device shows why lifting the block
by a short distance requires that the
cord be pulled a long distance.
SB42808M — $118.95
Motion Converter
Ever wonder how your car works? The Motion
Converter shows how the power generated by the
pistons in your engine transfers to the wheels,
making them turn round and round.
Student Model. 15" x 4" x 6-1⁄2". Sh. wt. 2.50 lbs.
SB40897M — $43.75
SB40568M — $133.90
SB42814M — $412.35
Wheel and Axle
A device consisting of a grooved wheel turned by a cord
or a chain with a rigidly attached axle for winding up
weight. Sometimes the chain or cord is replaced by a
crank or spike and is used in hoisting apparatus such as
cranes.
Student Model. 15" x 3" x 9". Sh. wt. 1.75 lbs.
SB20598M — $33.05
Demonstration Model. 25" x 6" x 7-1⁄2".
Sh. wt. 12 lbs.
SB42810M — $118.95
Gear Train
A system of two or more toothed wheels meshed
together so that the motion of one directs the others to
employ a force in a direction in which the resistance is to
be moved.
Student Model. 16" x 2-1⁄4" x 6". Sh. wt. 2.50 lbs.
SB22152M — $44.65
Demonstration Model. 38-1⁄2" x 12" x 5-1⁄2".
Sh. wt. 19 lbs.
SB42811M — $124.40
Wedge
One of the simplest of the simple machines, but it is capable
of great force amplification. The motion of the wedge
into the space between the two boards is converted to
vertical motion of the top board. Small taps on the wedge
can lift very large weights.
Student Model. 14" x 3" x 5-3⁄4". Sh. wt. 1.75 lbs.
SB42817M — $40.45
Demonstration Model. 34" x 11-1⁄2" x 5".
Sh. wt. 13 lbs.
SB42816M — $124.90
Pendulum
As the pendulum swings back and
forth, its energy changes from potential
energy into kinetic energy. But
the pendulum can be used as a
device to explore other concepts
as well. The time for one swing doesn’t
depend on the size of the swing or the
mass at the end of the pendulum, only
on the length. This is why the pendulum
came to be used in the earliest accurate
clocks.
Student Model. 16" x 4" x 6-1⁄2". Sh. wt. 1.75 lbs.
SB40355M — $33.05
Demonstration Model. 39" x 9-1⁄2" x 61⁄2".
Sh. wt. 14 lbs.
Screw
7"
An example of a simple machine, which converts a
circular motion (the turning of the screw) into a
linear motion. It also lets you amplify the force a
great deal, since turning the screw only moves the
end of the screw a small amount. 7" x 3-1⁄2" x 3-1⁄2".
Student Model. Sh. wt. 1.75 lbs.
SB40566M — $28.70
Demonstration Model. 19-1⁄2" x 10" x 4". Sh. wt. 11 lbs.
SB42813M — $89.20
Fulcrum Balance
The further from the pivot point a force is applied, the
greater its effect. This basic principle is behind the operation
of the lever and many other basic devices. This
model allows students the chance to freely experiment
with these ideas, by moving masses back and forth and
looking for the point of balance.
Student Model. 18" x 2-3⁄4" x 5-1⁄2". Sh. wt. 1.50 lbs.
