freshwater turtles
58.1 Report of the
Standing Committee

• Decision 14.128 directed Secretariat to contract the
IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist
Group to undertake a study to assist in implementation
of RC 11.9 (Rev. CoP13) on Conservation of and
trade in tortoises and freshwater turtles.
• Decision 15.80 directs the SC to review the study
(“A study of progress on conservation of and trade
in CITES-listed tortoises and freshwater turtles in
Asia” (CoP15 Inf. 22)) and make recommendations
at CoP16.
• Prepared by the Chair of the SC WG on Tortoises and
Freshwater Turtles.
• Provides draft Decisions that, inter alia,:
• encourage Parties to report on, and the SC to
make recommendations regarding seizures of live
tortoises and freshwater turtles; and trade in parts
and derivatives from CITES-listed tortoises and
freshwater turtles;
• direct the Secretariat to: undertake a study on
making NDFs for these species with recommendations
to be reviewed by AC and SC; convene a
CITES Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Task Force;
identify species in illegal trade and illegal trade
incidents; and evaluate identification and capacity-building
materials for these species; and
• direct the SC to review results of these studies
and make its own recommendations.

(“A study of progress on conservation of and trade in
CITES-listed tortoises and freshwater turtles in Asia”
(CoP15 Inf. 22)) and make recommendations to the
SC and/or CoP16.
• Prepared by the AC.
• Provides draft Decisions that have been incorporated
into CoP16 Doc. 58.1.
• Requests Secretariat to prepare a Notification to
inform Parties that reports of workshops on conservation
of tortoises and freshwater turtles held at
St. Louis (2010) and Singapore (2011) and the IUCN
study of progress on conservation of and trade in
CITES-listed tortoises and freshwater turtles in Asia
are available on-line, to state that AC encourages
Parties to take note of information and recommendations
contained in these documents, and, if appropriate,
to consider preparing amendment proposals or
formulate and implement appropriate domestic and
other measures to address the conservation of tortoises
and freshwater turtles.
• Recommends that SC review reports of the two workshops,
and make recommendations, as appropriate.
