16.0 Library, Documentation and
Archival Services
The National Institute of Open Schooling’s Library,
Documentation and Archival Unit has a rich collection
of print and non print material which includes 17,539
procured books, 312 complimentary books, 15,280
loose issues of journals and non-print collection of
727 audio/video cassettes. It also receives about 90
National/ International journals on subscription and
complimentary basis and 23 magazines, 19 Daily and
2 Weekly newspapers on subscription basis.
Newsletters of different organization like CBSE,
COBSE, COL, DELNET, IGNOU, NUEPA,
NCERT, NLM and UNESCO are also received on
complimentary basis. It caters to the needs of
academic and non-academic staff and other
educational experts who are engaged in the
development of curriculum and development of study
material for the NIOS learners.
The Archival Section: The main objective of this
section is to collect, store and preserve all documents
in print and non print form, published by the NIOS,
such as Annual Reports, Prospectus, Conference
Reports, and other important documents which have
a significant academic and archival value for other
open and distance learning system. It has a collection
of 266 documents at present.
Libraries at regional centres: A new initiative taken
by the Library Unit is to start the library services at
regional centres. The seed money of Rs. 50,000/-
each was granted to 14 regional/sub-regional centres
to establish libraries at regional centres. Guidelines
for establishment of libraries and list of books to be
procured were compiled and sent to regional centres
and assistance was also given to procure these books
and journals.
16.1 The NIOS library performs the
following tasks:
Technical Processing:
All procured books in the NIOS library are classified
and catalogued. It uses Dewey Decimal Classification
20th edition scheme for classification and Anglo-
American cataloguing rules for cataloguing of books.
During 2010-11, more than 380 books were classified
and catalogued.
Up-dation of Library Database:
The library database was up-dated by making entries
of books and journals, procured for the Library.
Data relating to issue/return of books and journals
were also entered.
Scanning for Educational News:
More than 4800 newspapers/magazines/journals
were scanned during 2010-11 for identifying news
items and articles on Education, Distance Education
and particularly on NIOS.
The NIOS Library provides the following services:
Circulation Service:
It includes issue/return of documents which includes
books, journals, magazines, audio/video cassettes and
CDs, registration of new members and issue of ‘No
Demand Certificate’ and reminders for overdue
books. During the years Seventy three library tickets
were issued to new staff members and ‘No Demand
Certificate’ was issued to twelve staff members.
Reminders were also sent for the overdue books.
Inter-Library Loan:
In this service, documents are made available from
other libraries to the users on Inter-Library Loan, in
case of non-availability of required documents in the
NIOS Library through DELNET. It is (Developing
Library Network), with more than 2035 institutions
as its members. The catalogue of books and other
documents of NIOS and other libraries can be
accessed by member libraries of DELNET and their
users at www.delnet.nic.in through union catalogue.
Current Awareness Service (CAS) Bulletin:
It is provided on monthly basis. In this service,
contents of new issues of journals are compiled in
print form, and circulated to the Chairman and Heads
