16.0 Library, Documentation and<br />

Archival Services<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong>’s Library,<br />

Documentation and Archival Unit has a rich collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> print and non print material which includes 17,539<br />

procured books, 312 complimentary books, 15,280<br />

loose issues <strong>of</strong> journals and non-print collection <strong>of</strong><br />

727 audio/video cassettes. It also receives about 90<br />

<strong>National</strong>/ International journals on subscription and<br />

complimentary basis and 23 magazines, 19 Daily and<br />

2 Weekly newspapers on subscription basis.<br />

Newsletters <strong>of</strong> different organization like CBSE,<br />

COBSE, COL, DELNET, IGNOU, NUEPA,<br />

NCERT, NLM and UNESCO are also received on<br />

complimentary basis. It caters to the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

academic and non-academic staff and other<br />

educational experts who are engaged in the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> curriculum and development <strong>of</strong> study<br />

material for the NIOS learners.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Archival Section: <strong>The</strong> main objective <strong>of</strong> this<br />

section is to collect, store and preserve all documents<br />

in print and non print form, published by the NIOS,<br />

such as <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>s, Prospectus, Conference<br />

<strong>Report</strong>s, and other important documents which have<br />

a significant academic and archival value for other<br />

open and distance learning system. It has a collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> 266 documents at present.<br />

Libraries at regional centres: A new initiative taken<br />

by the Library Unit is to start the library services at<br />

regional centres. <strong>The</strong> seed money <strong>of</strong> Rs. 50,000/-<br />

each was granted to 14 regional/sub-regional centres<br />

to establish libraries at regional centres. Guidelines<br />

for establishment <strong>of</strong> libraries and list <strong>of</strong> books to be<br />

procured were compiled and sent to regional centres<br />

and assistance was also given to procure these books<br />

and journals.<br />

16.1 <strong>The</strong> NIOS library performs the<br />

following tasks:<br />

Technical Processing:<br />

All procured books in the NIOS library are classified<br />

and catalogued. It uses Dewey Decimal Classification<br />

20th edition scheme for classification and Anglo-<br />

American cataloguing rules for cataloguing <strong>of</strong> books.<br />

During <strong>2010</strong>-<strong>11</strong>, more than 380 books were classified<br />

and catalogued.<br />

Up-dation <strong>of</strong> Library Database:<br />

<strong>The</strong> library database was up-dated by making entries<br />

<strong>of</strong> books and journals, procured for the Library.<br />

Data relating to issue/return <strong>of</strong> books and journals<br />

were also entered.<br />

Scanning for Educational News:<br />

More than 4800 newspapers/magazines/journals<br />

were scanned during <strong>2010</strong>-<strong>11</strong> for identifying news<br />

items and articles on Education, Distance Education<br />

and particularly on NIOS.<br />

<strong>The</strong> NIOS Library provides the following services:<br />

Circulation Service:<br />

It includes issue/return <strong>of</strong> documents which includes<br />

books, journals, magazines, audio/video cassettes and<br />

CDs, registration <strong>of</strong> new members and issue <strong>of</strong> ‘No<br />

Demand Certificate’ and reminders for overdue<br />

books. During the years Seventy three library tickets<br />

were issued to new staff members and ‘No Demand<br />

Certificate’ was issued to twelve staff members.<br />

Reminders were also sent for the overdue books.<br />

Inter-Library Loan:<br />

In this service, documents are made available from<br />

other libraries to the users on Inter-Library Loan, in<br />

case <strong>of</strong> non-availability <strong>of</strong> required documents in the<br />

NIOS Library through DELNET. It is (Developing<br />

Library Network), with more than 2035 institutions<br />

as its members. <strong>The</strong> catalogue <strong>of</strong> books and other<br />

documents <strong>of</strong> NIOS and other libraries can be<br />

accessed by member libraries <strong>of</strong> DELNET and their<br />

users at www.delnet.nic.in through union catalogue.<br />

Current Awareness Service (CAS) Bulletin:<br />

It is provided on monthly basis. In this service,<br />

contents <strong>of</strong> new issues <strong>of</strong> journals are compiled in<br />

print form, and circulated to the Chairman and Heads<br />
