Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20 largest countries in <strong>the</strong> world have modest growth rates but large demographic<br />

momentum and thus will make <strong>the</strong> largest contributions to total world population growth in <strong>the</strong><br />

next 20 years. The fastest growing countries are generally smaller, but <strong>the</strong>y are facing <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

burden <strong>of</strong> additional growth on a percentage basis (see Table 2.1.B-1). For <strong>the</strong> next several<br />

decades, global population growth will be concentrated in only a few regions and countries,<br />

mainly Muslim societies (almost <strong>the</strong> entire top half <strong>of</strong> Table 2.1.B-1) and huge states with<br />
