What's Public Service? It's Politeness
And Courtesy! Here Are 9 Examples
"Public service, an often used but seldom
described or defined term. Is as important
to motion upward in boxofflcc return
as publicity, planning, promotion or
presentation." reports the National Theatres
Showman, adding, "because "public
service' Is merely politeness and courtesy
to the Individual and there Is nothing more
Important In theatre manaRcmcnt."
The NT house organ goes on to quote
Emmett Shane. Westlake Theatre manager
in Los Angeles, who said examples of
public service may be one of a dozen things.
and listed the following nine:
1. Looking after the nicest Golden Age
"chief" In your neighborhood (until she
theatre manager
talks as much about the
as she might the local minister or priest).
Example: Shane recently took a Golden
Ager. ex-vaude star Belle Wilton, to the
Paramount studios for a visit with "Houseboat"
producers Mel Shavelson and Jack
Rose, who are authorities on early day
vaudeville. They earlier produced "Beau
James" and "Seven Little Foys."
the phone. A good natured. attractivevoiced
cashier can be one of your most important
assets. .
3. Arranging for free, convenient parking
for patrons.
4. Getting an occasional autographed picture
of a film star for local hospitalized
hospital patients for the friends who may
Example: Shane has visited in his
theatre's nearby vicinity three volunteer
group.s—the Braille lastllule, the County
Heart, and TB & Health as,soclatlons— to
present tickets to weekly volunteers. He
has also given passes to physicians at the
nearby Medical Ass'n to give to the deserving
