The main wharf remains an important element in <strong>Akaroa</strong> life and is the most conspicuous<br />

and important reminder of <strong>Akaroa</strong>’s history of interaction with the sea and of its role as<br />

the Peninsula’s main port. (Another reminder of <strong>Akaroa</strong>’s past as a port, the Shipping<br />

Office, was discussed above.)<br />

step forward for <strong>Akaroa</strong> in an age when its connections with the outside world were<br />

Figure 5.27. A wharf was built at the southern end of <strong>Akaroa</strong>, at the foot of Church<br />

Street, in 1859. This original wharf was superseded in 1886-87 by the main wharf but<br />

survived in an increasingly dilapidated state until the 1930s. There are business<br />

premises around the curve of Beach Road, but Rue Jolie, defined by a post-and-rail<br />
