3 Sri Lanka The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an insular state in the Indian Ocean and was earlier known under the name Ceylon. Sri Lanka is a member state of the Commonwealth with the seat of the government is Sri Jayewardenepura and the capital as well as the biggest city is Colombo. The following Figures (1 and 2) are showing the flag and the coat of arms of Sri Lanka. It is parted from India through the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. The coral islands of the Adam’s Bridge represent an incoherent connection of the north-western Sri Lanka and the Indian state Tamil Nadu. 6
The longest destination from the north to the south is about 440 km and the widest part of the island measures around 220 km. The total expanse of the country is 65,610 km² and the highest elevation of the central highlands is the Pidurutalagala with 2524 m above sea level.
