3.1.2 EU LCA to go Project<br />

Initiative participation in international sustainable environmental programs<br />

To fulfill <strong>UMC</strong> duties as a global and corporate citizen, <strong>UMC</strong> initiates and invests human and financial capital to participate in<br />

EU FP7 and improve ability of CFP inventory and provide customer specific CFP information. We also establish a foundation<br />

for Energy Conservation & Carbon Reduction for green product design.<br />

In 2010, <strong>UMC</strong>, with the help from Industrial Technology<br />

Research Institute (ITRI), became an official member in the<br />

FP7. The project name is "Boosting Life Cycle Assessment<br />

use in SMEs: development of sectoral methods and tools"<br />

or “LCA to go” for short, just like coffee to go since they are<br />

both simple, fast, and easy.<br />

● Solving European SMEs difficult of green design base<br />

on Life cycle assessment: Reducing time, effort and cost<br />

of inputs of LCA.<br />

EU FP7 Project Introduced Domestically<br />

ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan)<br />

and DoIT (Department of Industrial Technology) introduced<br />

this EU project domestically as Technology Development<br />

Programs. <strong>UMC</strong> Cooperation with the domestic industry<br />

and academia, research and development common to the<br />

global semiconductor industry's simplified LCA model. By<br />

the plan cultivated MA and PhD talent adn help suppliers<br />

Carbon Footprint inventory and held educational training<br />

activities.<br />

<strong>UMC</strong> has leading global foundry experience as well<br />

as support of the supply chain partners. In 2011, <strong>UMC</strong><br />

completed the survey on SMEs’ demand of LCA for Taiwan<br />

products. According to the academic reference, green<br />

house gas is major impact of varies environmental impact.<br />

So this project was focus on IC’s CFP.<br />
