About this <strong>Report</strong><br />
The <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Corporate</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Responsibility</strong> <strong>Report</strong> is the<br />
eighth corporate social responsibility report issued by <strong>UMC</strong>,<br />
and also the thirteenth public non-financial sustainability<br />
report. No significant changes have occurred in the<br />
reporting year. Through this report, <strong>UMC</strong> presents its<br />
ideas and achievements in sustainable development and<br />
discloses its progress on corporate social responsibility in<br />
an accountable, transparent and sustainable way.<br />
1 SCOPE<br />
The information revealed in this report covers <strong>UMC</strong>’s<br />
performance and data surrounding environmental<br />
protection, corporate governance and social participation<br />
during the period from January 1, <strong>2012</strong> to December 31,<br />
<strong>2012</strong>, and major events through March 31, 2013. The<br />
scope of this report covers manufacturing sites in Taiwan<br />
and Singapore. <strong>UMC</strong>’s subsidiaries in Japan, Europe and<br />
the United States are excluded.<br />
2 <strong>Report</strong>ing Guidelines and Principles<br />
The structure and contents of this report reflect <strong>UMC</strong>’s<br />
major agendas on corporate social responsibility and the<br />
area of interest of its stakeholders. The report is aligned<br />
with the Global <strong>Report</strong>ing Initiative (GRI) G3 Sustainability<br />
<strong>Report</strong>ing Guidelines and follows the AA1000 standards to<br />
assure that <strong>UMC</strong> complies with the principles of inclusivity,<br />
materiality and responsiveness. Financial data in the<br />
financial report is certified by the CPA. For GHG inventory<br />
and reduction data, please refer to chapter 3.<br />
3 VERIFICATION<br />
In June, 2013, the Norwegian company DNV has verified<br />
that the report conforms to GRI G3 application level A+<br />
and fulfills requirements of the AA1000AS framework. A<br />
verification statement is attached in the appendix of this<br />
report.<br />
