● “Seeds of Hope”- Tutoring Children from Disadvantaged<br />

Families<br />

<strong>UMC</strong> started the “Spreading the Seeds of Hope” program<br />

in 2005, the 25th anniversary for <strong>UMC</strong>, to advance<br />

education for children who are from disadvantaged families.<br />

<strong>UMC</strong> had invested 130 million to assist 5,774 children<br />

from disadvantaged families up until <strong>2012</strong>, and had<br />

accomplished its goals for this phase. More detail please<br />

see 4.4.3.<br />

● “Seed of Green Energy”- Promoting and Educating<br />

Green Energy Talents<br />

<strong>UMC</strong> makes efforts in a low-carbon supply chain and<br />

green energy industry. Moreover, <strong>UMC</strong> works hard to<br />

support various environmental activities and environmental<br />

education such as “Turn-off lights”, “Green <strong>UMC</strong>, Happy<br />

Earth”, “Tzu Chi Foundation Camp”, and so on. In addition,<br />

<strong>UMC</strong> also promotes the concepts of environmental<br />

protection to students, friends and families to practice in<br />

everyone’s life.<br />

● “Seed of Semiconductor”- Educating high-tech talents<br />

This plan focused on educating high-tech talents. We not<br />

only invested in developing internal talents’ ability, but<br />

also held semiconductor manufacturing training courses<br />

at Chung Yuan Christian University, National Central<br />

University, National Cheng Kung University, National<br />

Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, and Kuang-Fu<br />

High School. <strong>UMC</strong> experts in various fields teach young<br />

students about semiconductor manufacturing to cultivate<br />

semiconductor talents.<br />

<strong>UMC</strong> also donated Green laboratory equipment to NTU<br />

to promote green energy and semiconductor technology<br />

research and development. Through the National Science<br />

Council projects, <strong>UMC</strong> researched with various universities<br />

to develop advanced scientific and technological research.<br />

Implementation Summary<br />

● <strong>UMC</strong> has opened semiconductor manufacturing training<br />

courses at Chung Yuan Christian University and National<br />

Central University. About 60-70 students took these<br />

courses in 2011.<br />

● <strong>UMC</strong> has opened nanotechnology courses at the<br />

Graduate School of Electrical Engineering in National<br />

Cheng Kung University. 130 students participated in <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

● <strong>UMC</strong> worked with Kuang-Fu High School, the Minghsin<br />

University of Science and Technology and the Ta Hwa<br />

Institute of Technology on an industry-academia<br />

cooperation program. In <strong>2012</strong>, 196 people participated in<br />

the program.<br />

● <strong>UMC</strong> provides universities with summer internship<br />

programs during July-August. Around 40 students take<br />

part in this program every year.<br />

● <strong>UMC</strong> encourages schools to come and visit the company<br />

premises to bridge the gap between theory and practice.<br />

In 2011, over 200 students from NCKU, NTU visited <strong>UMC</strong>.<br />

● <strong>UMC</strong> has combined its ideas with substitute military<br />

service to create the “7 th Distinguished Technology<br />

Talents Cultivation Project”. In <strong>2012</strong>, four people were<br />

admitted into the project.<br />

● Sponsoring NCKU CFC (Camp of Clubs) Program<br />

● Career Tutor Program in NTU and NCKU.<br />
