Students become familiar with probate<br />

aware of the various forms, procedures,<br />

and tax consequences involved in probating<br />

A study of the principles behind personal<br />

injury settlements and litigation, with<br />

an emphasis on Wyoming law. Topics<br />

Family Law<br />

Students develop an awareness of the<br />

legal assistant’s role in the practice of<br />

family law. Students demonstrate an ability<br />

to produce documents concerning the<br />

formation and dissolution of marriage,<br />

property rights of married and unmarried<br />

couples, and parent-child relationships<br />

(including adoption, custody, and support).<br />

Students demonstrate knowledge<br />

of the tax consequences, basic legal procedures,<br />

and ethical practices involved in<br />

the practice of family law. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of LEGL 1500 or permission<br />

of instructor.<br />

Court Procedures and the Legal System<br />

A study of court procedures and substantive<br />

law through the examination of court<br />

cases and direct observation of court<br />

room activities at the county, municipal,<br />

state, and federal levels. Students gain<br />

an understanding of court procedures<br />

and learn about the locations, purposes,<br />

operations, and staffing of various courts<br />

located in <strong>Laramie</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Students<br />

also learn about substantive law through<br />

readings and by observing what is necessary<br />

to prove a case in court. Prerequisites:<br />

Completion of LEGL 1500, 1710,<br />

1720, or permission of instructor, and<br />

completion of 15 credit hours of LEGL<br />

coursework.<br />

Real Estate and Property Law<br />

A study of the law of real property and a<br />

survey of the more common types of real<br />

estate transactions. Students demonstrate<br />

the ability to prepare instruments<br />

necessary to complete various real estate<br />

transactions. Prerequisite: Completion of<br />

LEGL 1500 or permission of instructor.<br />

Criminal Law and Procedure<br />

The student acquires knowledge of statutory<br />

and common law crimes, including<br />

an understanding of criminal law theory<br />

and of the construction and interpretation<br />

of criminal law statutes. Students<br />

also draft motions, prepare orders, and<br />

learn to interview criminal clients and to<br />

provide other office support necessary<br />

in criminal law practice. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of LEGL 1500 or permission<br />

of instructor.<br />

Constitutional Law<br />

Students study the basic principles and<br />

applications of constitutional law in an<br />

historical context. Each section of the<br />

course material will focus on four key<br />

concepts: limited government, the protection<br />

of private property, the promotion<br />

of commerce, and individual rights,<br />

with an emphasis on individual rights<br />

and due process. Students explore the<br />

impact of state and federal constitutional<br />

requirements on the development of the<br />

American legal system and the process<br />

by which United States Supreme Court<br />

accepts and decides cases. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of LEGL 1500 or permission<br />

of the instructor. Successful completion<br />

of ENGL 1010 is highly recommended.<br />

Administrative Law<br />

A course in which students develop an<br />

understanding of the principles of administrative<br />

law, administrative remedies,<br />

and administrative hearing procedures in<br />

various state and federal governmental<br />

agencies. Areas studied will include social<br />

security, EEOC, workers’ compensation,<br />

as well as others. The course focuses on<br />

several practical problems in areas where<br />

legal assistants frequently are employed.<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of LEGL 1500 or<br />

permission of instructor.<br />

Computer Applications in the Law<br />

Students demonstrate an awareness<br />

of available materials and demonstrate<br />

skills required in working with an<br />

automated law practice. Projects in this<br />

introductory course include, but are not<br />

limited to, the areas of timekeeping and<br />

billing, substantive systems, word processing,<br />

document composition, litigation<br />

control, and legal research. Students<br />

also develop skills with WordPerfect<br />

software and a variety of spreadsheets.<br />

Prerequisites: Completion of LEGL 1500,<br />

LEGL 1710, COSC 1200 or equivalent or<br />

permission of instructor.<br />

Legal Assistant Internship<br />

Students demonstrate the ability to<br />

apply theoretical knowledge gained in<br />

the classroom by interning in a private<br />

office, governmental agency, court, or<br />

private business which utilizes attorneys.<br />

Students participate in any required seminars<br />

and produce documents describing<br />

and evaluating the internship experience.<br />

Prerequisites: Completion of LEGL 1500,<br />

LEGL 1710, LEGL 1720, LEGL 2500, and<br />

LEGL 2550, and permission of instructor.<br />

Students read and analyze children’s<br />

literature and demonstrate its use to<br />

teach all academic subjects. Students<br />

evaluate works within the genres of children’s<br />

and model the use of children’s books<br />

Concurrent enrollment in or completion<br />

Introduction to Supervision<br />

Students acquire techniques to improve<br />

or establish themselves as first-line supervisors.<br />

This is a continuation of MGT 1010. Topics<br />

include goal setting, stress management,<br />

sexual harassment, workplace<br />

politics, self-esteem, professional image,<br />

and other attitudes and behavior necessary<br />

Completion of MGT 1010.<br />

MGT 1200<br />

Human Resources Management<br />

Students obtain knowledge of the<br />

components of human resource management.<br />

Major areas of focus will be human<br />

behavior, human resource planning, job<br />

analysis and design, employee assistance<br />

programs, wage and salary administration,<br />

performance appraisal system,<br />

collective bargaining, and labor law.<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of MGT 1000 or<br />
