Business Ethics<br />

Students examine the nature of ethical<br />

behavior in business and its broader<br />

implications for society. They gain<br />

knowledge of the history of ethics in<br />

business, factors that impact the ethical<br />

decision-making process in business,<br />

and the global aspect of business ethics.<br />

Students also gain skills and strategies<br />

to develop and evaluate a business code<br />

of ethics as well as employee training<br />

programs on ethical business behavior.<br />

Small Business Practices<br />

A course exploring the components<br />

of starting a small business. Students<br />

become knowledgeable about legal<br />

who is considering establishing and<br />

operating a small business. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of DVST 0510 or ENGL 0510<br />

A course exploring the basics of financing<br />

a small business through private sources<br />

and special Wyoming funding programs.<br />

Topics include sources of capital, types of<br />

and loss statements, financial ratios,<br />

depreciation, and taxation. Prerequisite:<br />

the knowledge to a variety of accounting<br />

and data entry situations. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of DVST 0900 or MATH 0900<br />

(or equivalent placement test score) or<br />

instructor approval.<br />

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals<br />

of English and the established<br />

standards of usage while emphasizing<br />

their importance in the business world.<br />

or ENGL 0520 and ENGL 0700 or ENGL<br />

1001 (or equivalent placement test<br />

Office Reference Materials<br />

A course in which students increase<br />

their information literacy using reference<br />

manuals, directories, and interviews.<br />

Students learn to use computer searches<br />

to research information needed in<br />

today’s busy office. Students also learn<br />

basic rules of style that apply to written<br />

communication in business–from e-mail<br />

to formal reports. Students utilize the<br />

library as a research facility to perform<br />

research and gather information using<br />

various sources, and learn how to organize<br />

the information to be used for writing<br />

reports and/or giving presentations.<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of DVST 0520<br />

or ENGL 0520 (or equivalent placement<br />

test score).<br />

keyboarding Applications I<br />

A course in which students develop<br />

document formatting skills, intermediate<br />

keyboarding skills, and word processing<br />

skills on the microcomputer.<br />

Students acquire knowledge of basic<br />

word processing commands in order<br />

to prepare properly formatted letters,<br />

memos, reports, and tabulations, as well<br />

as special problems. Students must enter<br />

this course with a keyboarding speed of<br />

at least 25 words a minute by touch with<br />

five or fewer errors on a three-minute<br />

timing. CMAP 1500 may be taken as a<br />

prerequisite to achieving the necessary<br />

entry-level keyboarding speed. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of CMAP 1500, or<br />

one year of high school keyboarding, or<br />

approval of instructor.<br />

Students continue to develop advanced<br />

keyboarding Applications III<br />

A course designed to provide students<br />

with the knowledge and ability to integrate<br />

software applications to create<br />

dynamic business documents, databases,<br />

worksheets, and presentations by copying,<br />

linking, and embedding information<br />

from one application to another. An integrated<br />

software package will be used to<br />

teach the course. Prerequisite: Completion<br />

of BOTK 1645 and experience with<br />

Microsoft Office software, or approval of<br />

instructor.<br />

Speed and Accuracy Development<br />

A keyboarding review course emphasizing<br />

speed and accuracy. Proofreading skills<br />

are stressed. This course is designed<br />

to improve the student’s keyboarding<br />

speed and accuracy and proofreading<br />

skills through directed drills and practice.<br />

Prerequisite: Ability to key by touch at 25<br />

words a minute on a three-minute timing<br />

with five or fewer errors.<br />

Machine Transcription<br />

An introduction to machine transcription<br />

through word processing. Transcription<br />

techniques, document production, and<br />

organizational skills are emphasized.<br />

Machine dictation, including origination<br />

of documents, is introduced. Prerequisites:<br />

Completion of DVST 0520 or<br />

ENGL 0520 and ENGL 0700 or ENGL<br />

1001 (or equivalent placement test<br />

scores). BOTK 1645 and BOTK 1540; concurrent<br />

An introduction to business records<br />

management including systematic<br />

control over the creation, distribution,<br />

systems and Association of Records<br />

Managers and Administrators (ARMA)<br />

filing procedures. Prerequisites: Completion<br />

of DVST 0520 or ENGL 0520, ENGL<br />

0700 or ENGL 1001, and MATH 0920 (or<br />

equivalent placement test scores).
