Class III safety cab<strong>in</strong>ets<br />

A class III safety cab<strong>in</strong>et provides maximum protection to <strong>the</strong> worker and <strong>the</strong> environment.<br />

The experiment, however, is less protected, because <strong>the</strong>re is no downward air flow<br />

<strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>et. A class III cab<strong>in</strong>et is completely sealed, and arm-length rubber gloves<br />

are attached to ports <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>et <strong>in</strong> a gas-tight manner to allow for manipulation of<br />

<strong>the</strong> materials isolated <strong>in</strong>side. Materials are brought <strong>in</strong>to and removed from <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>et<br />

through a small air-lock or double-ended autoclave.<br />

Horizontal lam<strong>in</strong>ar air flow cab<strong>in</strong>ets and cross flow cab<strong>in</strong>ets<br />

In laboratories where animal cells or <strong>in</strong> vitro plant materials are manipulated, use is sometimes<br />

made of a horizontal lam<strong>in</strong>ar air flow cab<strong>in</strong>et or a cross flow cab<strong>in</strong>et. These are<br />

cab<strong>in</strong>ets <strong>in</strong> which sterile air is blown <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>et, whereas <strong>the</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ated air is<br />

blown <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>laboratory</strong> space. This means that <strong>the</strong> <strong>laboratory</strong> worker is sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

contam<strong>in</strong>ated air flow. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong>se cab<strong>in</strong>ets provide protection nei<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong><br />

worker, nor to <strong>the</strong> environment. They are <strong>the</strong>refore not considered as real safety cab<strong>in</strong>ets,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir use should be discouraged <strong>in</strong> most cases. These cab<strong>in</strong>ets cannot be used for<br />

activities pos<strong>in</strong>g a risk to <strong>the</strong> worker or to <strong>the</strong> environment. The use of such cab<strong>in</strong>ets may<br />

be permitted exceptionally, when no use is made of open conta<strong>in</strong>ers hold<strong>in</strong>g GMOs, such<br />

as open petri dishes conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g modified bacteria or opened Erlenmeyer flasks conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

bacterial cultures.<br />
