Page 18 What makes a Leader Trained? 100% Quality Districts in 2010 t r a i n i n g We often hear that question. Most leaders know that they need to be trained, but are not sure exactly what that means. Below are the requirements for each position to be “trained” in our computer tracking system. If you are registered for one of these positions and know that you have not taken all these courses, chances are that you’re not officially trained. Please see your District Executive or District Training Chair to figure out how to correct this. You and they can either get you the training you need, or use a Training Correction Form to update your records and show you have completed the training. Here are the requirements for many positions: • Cub Scout leaders are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials and the Cub Scout Leader Specific training for their position. • Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. • Troop committee members are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials and the Troop Committee Challenge as their Leader Specific training. • are considered trained when they have Varsity Scout leaders and assistants completed New Leader Essentials, Varsity Scout Leader Specific Training (available April 2002), and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. • Venturing crew Advisors, assistant Advisors, and crew committee members are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific Training. Council is Committed to Training. Make a commitment to yourself and to the children you serve to get the training you need to thrive as a Scouting volunteer. That’s the message the council wants to reinforce this fall as it energizes the Council Training Team with a specific mission to expand district training programs so that all Scouters have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. With the goal of preparing all volunteers for the important roles they play in their units, the Council Training Team extends a special invitation to all district training chairs to attend this month’s Top Team meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Come learn about some exciting new ideas for promoting training and join in a conversation about the council’s training needs and challenges. Council Training Chairman Jim Virgin will highlight some new ideas for making districtlevel training events more accessible and more convenient for volunteers. Our goal is to put a fresh focus on the core background that every volunteer needs to do a great job: New Leader Essentials for every volunteer and Leader Specific Training for every position. We need your help to make this work. The Training Team asks every district to make sure that someone will be there. Compass Points Leadership Development Conference Our OA Lodge will be conducting its fifth annual council-wide Leadership Development Conference (LDC) on Saturday November 22 at La Salle High School (11199 S.E. Fuller Road, Milwaukie, Oregon). LDC 2008 is aimed at Boy Scout troop and patrol leaders between the ages of 13-17 and preferably First Class rank or higher. Participants do not need to be members of the Order of the Arrow. Registered Scouters are also welcome and encouraged to attend. This youth-led OA-sponsored leadership conference offers exceptional training in a one-day event, bringing together our best youth instructors from throughout our council. The conference reinforces critical leadership skills including how to build more effective teams, improve communication and planning skills, and motivate others to achieve success. t r a i n i n g October 2008 Page 19 Training a critical step for every adult to ensure quality Scouting program Basic Leader Training is designed to give position-related information to all adult leaders in Scouting. Building on the foundation established in Fast Start Training, Basic Leader Training goes into greater detail. Basic Leader Training has two parts: New Leader Essentials is for all new leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. It helps with developing an understanding of Scouting goals, organization and programs. This training is the beginning point and is a required component to be considered a trained Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturing leader. It is usually done in conjunction with leader specific training. It highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of the Scouting program. Once completed, it need not be taken again, even if the leader moves to a different position or program level. Leader Specific Training gives a leader the knowledge and skills needed for their specific position. Leader Specific Training is available for the following positions in Scouting: • Tiger Cub leader • Cub Scout den leader & assistant • Webelos den leader & assistant Cub Scout Adult Pow-Wow! A • Cubmaster & assistant • Unit committee members • Scoutmaster / Varsity Coach & asst • Venturing Advisor and assistant Basic Leader Training goes into greater detail on youth development and boy behavior, program planning, activities, and the purposes of the program. It is usually presented in one or two group sessions. Every Scout leader should complete Basic Leader Training; it prepares leaders to deliver a quality, fun-filled program. Leaders who understand the whys and hows of the program are more effective in their roles. They know how to use available resources to provide an exciting and worthwhile program for boys. Trained leaders have confidence in carrying out their responsibilities and, along with the boys, have more fun. Your district training chair, unit commissioner, or pack trainer can help you learn about the Basic Leader Training available in your district and council. Dates and locations of upcoming training courses are often announced in the local council or district newsletter or Web site. Remember: Every youth deserves a trained leader. Fun Day of adult Cub Scout Learning! When: Saturday, November 15, 2008 Pow Wow is an all-day Cub Scout adult leader information extravaganza! This fun resource fair goes beyond New Leader Essentials Training for Cub Scout leaders, providing tips and ideas for various topics such as ceremonies, annual planning, skits, songs, crafts, outdoor cooking, the Tiger Cub program and many, many more. Pow Wow is the event of the year to renew knowledge, learn current policies, and share experiences in Scouting. It is the biggest one-day Cub Scout council training event. All Cub Scouters are invited and encouraged to attend. We promise there will be something for everyone! All this for only $15 if you sign up by October 24! Participants select their preferred topics online and receive a schedule immediately upon registration. Class sessions are limited in size and are filled on a first-come, firstserved basis, therefore participants are encouraged to register early to secure their preferred classes. Basic Leader Training The new Basic Leader Training comprises two parts: New Leader Essentials for all unit-level leaders and Leader Specific training, which is based on the leader’s unit-level position. Basic Leader Training is designed for maximum flexibility. The sessions can be delivered over time—training on one or more evenings a week or month—or in a one-day training event that incorporates all program areas. It is suitable for large or small groups and may be presented to leaders of one or more units each time. Each council and district may decide the appropriate delivery method, keeping in mind that the focus is to remove roadblocks and achieve 100 percent trained leaders. New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers—Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders—take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once. Contact your district training chair or district executive to find out when the next training session is in your area. Benefits of New Leader Essentials • Assistance in implementing the full Scouting program with chartered organizations. • A better understanding of the advantages of encouraging youth and adult volunteers to move through the traditional program as their youth mature. • An awareness of the different aspects of the Scouting program, which may result in leaders taking advantage of those programs for a child in a different age group. 100% Quality Districts in 2010
