A numbered balloon will be given for each camp reservation made that morning. We’ll draw balloon numbers at the Pow Wow opening ceremony to select winning packs. We will repeat the training again at the Chairperson breakout at Roundtable on October 9. This year we are offering an incentive for those who turn in on time and without discrepancy. The incentive is a $50 gift certificate at the Salem Scout Shop to the first unit or ward that turns in their charter on time and is posted without any discrepancies. Two $25 gift certificates for the Salem Scout Shop will be given out in a drawing at the December Roundtable among those units that met the deadline and were postable. Rules will go out with the recharter packets on October 3rd. Also, your unit commissioner will schedule a time to review and pick up the charter when you pick up your packet. An LDS workshop will be schedule through the Stake Young Men’s President. For those District Contacts Acting District Chairman Dustan Johnson H/541.928.6694 without access to the internet, the district office will be open Tuesday and Thursday Evenings from 6-8:30 or by appointment from Oct 7 till Nov 11. Membership Good news the district is growing. For the summer months we grew by 1.4%. That is something to cheer about. Also, each non-LDS pack had a joining night last month is September. Many of you are doing peer to peer recruiting this month and insuring your new youth are getting added to the charter next month. Great job! Still, why recruit, why push for membership growth. There are several reasons to be the growing premier youth development program in the country. One, the more members we have the more adult volunteers we have, spreading the work load of the unit. Two, growth demonstrates to others (youth programs, foundations, United Way and others) that we are a relevant and worthwhile organization, this generates opportunities for partnership and funding. Third, growth represents positive advancement of our program and values to more of America’s youth. Fourth and final thought, if this program is of value to you and your child, is it not worthwhile for someone else. So, continue the great work you are doing in bringing scouting to more of our youth. Our next step is to retain them and we will bringing that up at roundtable. See you there. Training October is the big training month for the district. Our Training Chair, Jon Aaberg, is setting up a huge training workshop on Oct 11 at the Training Center in Millersburg. Registration begins at 8 am. His team is going to provide New Leaders Essential, Cub and Boy Scout Leader Specific Training, Committee Training. There will be a Charter Representative Training Class put on by the DE. Venture Leader and Varsity Leader training will be available to those that pre-register for those two courses. To pre-register send an e-mail to sjohnson@ cpcbsa.org with course and how many will attend. Veteran’s Day Parade Veteran’s Day Parade is Tuesday 11, November. The district will enter the Tiger mobile and our Three Amigos; Tiger, Akela and Baloo. Units wanting to enter as separate marching unit or floats may do so, entry forms available at Roundtable and the District Office, entry must be in by October 20th. Feel free to join the district and the Three Amigos to honor our veterans! LOCK IN The Lock in is coming January 16th at the Linn County Fairgrounds. On-line registration should be available Oct 1, 2008. More information is coming to a Roundtable near you. Western theme this year featuring the return of Black Bart or the Son of Black Bart. Lots of fun activities, display booths, movies and skits. See you there pardner! Help a Guard Family Next spring over 3000 guardsmen from the state of Oregon will deploy to Iraq for a one year tour of duty. Over a hundred will be from the armories here in Linn County, leaving families and love ones behind. This will be the biggest deployment since World War II for Oregon. You will know someone who has deployed. If you know of a guard family that has their love one deployed next year, I invite you to ask them to join our scouting family. The district is working on scholarships for families that have an enlisted guardsman deployed. Some of our events in 2009 and 2010 will be open to deployed families.
