Many packs have already conducted their Join Nights, some packs will be having theirs in the first week of October. Here are five important things that must happen following your packs join night. How many have you already done? 1. Turn in all applications with appropriate fees to the Council Service Center or your district executive. 2. Ensure new scouts have one or more pos- 3. 4. itive scouting experiences within the first two weeks after they join your pack. Ensure all new den leaders and pack leaders receive Fast Start Training and make plans to attend New Leader Essentials and Leader Specific Training on October 20th. Keep families informed about den and pack activities. 5. Plan your next recruiting effort. There are still many boys that have not been asked to join Cub Scouts. Remember that your pack can earn free pinewood derby cars by recruiting and registering 10% more youth then you had registered on your charter on December 31st 2007. Camp Lewis Open House New Cub Scouts are promised opportunities to shoot BB guns and archery, explore camps, and have fun and adventure. Camp open house provides an opportunity to deliver this promise. Please let all of your new Cub Scouts and any boys who are thinking of joining, know about this great event which will be held Saturday October 25th. We will need some volunteers to make this happen! We gladly welcome adult volunteers and youth ages 13 and up to help us staff this even. The full-day time commitment will be from about 7:30 am to 4 pm. Two, two-hour sessions will run from 9-11 am and from 1-3 pm, with lunch in between. There will be room for folks who can only work one session as well. Scouts in our district are off and selling! If your unit would like to earn some money you can still get involved in the Take Order sale by calling Darlene Parnell at 360-887-7190. Training On October 25th we will be holding the following trainings at Christ Community Church (11900 NE 95th St. #440, Vancouver, WA 98682) • New Leader Essentials • Cub Scout Leader Specific Training • Boy Scout Specific Training • Venture Leader Specific Training If you have any questions regarding those trainings, please contact Rick Gifft at 360- 892-3661 or Ltuisis@aol.com. Sasquatch Hunt Mike McElveny deserves a big thank Compass Points you for planning and carrying out yet another very successful Sasquatch Hunt on the last weekend of September. Everyone had a blast! Charter Renewal It’s that time of year again. Charter Renewal is coming up quickly. Charter turn-in will be as follows on November 13 for all LDS units and on November 7th (time and location TBA) all non-LDS units will turn their charters in. All non-LDS units will again have a chance to turn in charters on November 13th one hour before Roundtable. If you have questions or need to make special arrangements please call our District Commissioner, Roger Jarvis at 360-687-4857 or email at rapidroger72@aol.com. Pow-Wow Its not too late to signup for Pow-Wow. Pow-Wow will be held Saturday November 15th. This is a great opportunity for Cub Scout leaders and parents to get great ideas on how to run a variety of cub scout activities, including den meetings and pack meetings. This will also be your first opportunity to signup for Cub Scout day camp and resident camp for 2009. New Roundtable Commissioners The Silver Star District welcomes three new volunteers who have stepped up to lead roundtables. Firstly, Jim Ghormley will be the new Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner and Roundtable MC. Secondly, Sheila Cruz and Monica Leggett will be the new Cub Scout Roundtable Co-Commissioners. These three folks are fired up to make roundtable bigger and better and make it the most efficient use of time and resources. New District Executive Announced We are pleased to announce and welcome Adam Hough, the new District Executive for the Sunset Trail. Adam grew up in Rapid District Contacts District Chairman vacant City, South Dakota where he enjoyed playing baseball and received his Eagle Scout Rank. Adam moved out to Portland, OR in 2000 and graduated from Portland State University in 2007 with a double major degree in Marketing and Advertising Management. Adam and his wife Arren just welcomed their son Mason into the world on July 16th. “I’m thrilled to be involved in Scouting again and also getting my family involved. I look forward to making the best district in CPC even better!!” Adam will be an asset to the Sunset Trail District with his Scouting, business, and marketing experience. Please help make Adam Hough feel welcome. School Night Flyers School Night flyers and postcards are available and can be printed free of charge. The flyers are available with Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing themes. Items to be printed on the flyer are date, time, and location of the school night. Please contact Kelly McHargue at 503-225-5727 or kmchargue@cpcbsa.org for all flyer requests. Please allow a minimum of 72 hours for processing. Please set a date for a School night this month. It is important to sustain and grow our Scouts in the program. Every boy should have the opportunity to enjoy Scouting. Let’s get involved and offer an invitation to join Scouting. Cub Scout units that grow 10% in youth from December 2007 will receive free Pinewood Derby Cars for the entire Pack. Popcorn Anyone? The Popcorn sale is in full swing and we have more units selling in Sunset Trail than we have in years past! Thank you to all the unit kernels for making this a keystone year for ST Popcorn sales in the future. You should be well on your way to making your Popcorn Goal. Keep selling! There are many units (Packs and Troops) that had excellent success with Friends of Scouting Campaign in 2008. These units contacted all past contributors, Scouting Alumni, and current Scout families and asked for their contribution to Scouting. This year, we are looking for a few units to serve as FOS Pacesetters and kickoff their campaigns in December. The Scout Families and unit supporters benefit by setting the pace for the district. Also, pacesetters benefit with a second tax deduction during the same year. The unit and contributors are finished with the FOS Campaign before the New Year has begun. New Beaverton Mayor Honored The Sunset Trail District and the Cascade Pacific Council announces the honoree of the 2008 Citizen of the Year Dinner. Dennis Doyle, a long time City Councilman of the Beaverton City Council and recently elected Mayor was chosen to receive the award. The dinner is a fundraising event to raise money for Scouting in our council. The reception will begin at 5:30pm with dinner at 6:30pm at Ernesto’s Italian Restaurant on October 22th.
