A Bequest to Further
Good Work
Nancy and David were dedicated volunteers.
Over the years, they had seen
many individuals impacted by the good work
of our organization. They wanted to create
a legacy to provide future support to continue
our mission.
Dave: The work of the Boy Scouts of
America was important to us and we provided
support with current gifts, but wanted
to do more. We received their newsletter
and noted that we could make a gift from
our estate and join the Scouting Heritage
Society. We saw a picture of smiling people
just like us and we wanted to be part
of that group.
Nancy: We met with our lawyer to revise
our wills and we each included a provision
for a bequest. Our lawyer put language
in the will that allows a percentage of our
estate to go to the Boy Scouts of America
local Endowment Fund. This was easy to arrange
and permits us to still use our assets
during our lives if we need them.
We told their gift planner about our
decision and were excited when we were
invited to a special event honoring us. We
will continue to make gifts during our lives,
but it feels good to know that our support
will help in the future.
You also may want to make it easy and
convenient to have a bequest included in
your will. The language below shows how a
bequest can very easily be included in your
will.
Example bequest language - feel free
to change the numbers or percentages as
you desire.
1. Bequest of cash: “I bequeath the sum
of $10,000 to The Cascade Pacific Council,
Boy Scouts of America.”
2. Bequest of a percent of the estate: “I
devise and bequeath 20% of the remainder
and residue of property owned at my
death, whether real or personal, and wherever
located to The Cascade Pacific Council,
Boy Scouts of America.”
3. Contingent Bequest: “If my brother John
Doe survives me, I devise and bequeath 20%
of the remainder and residue of property
owned at my death, whether real or personal,
and wherever located to John Doe.
If John Doe does not survive me, then I devise
and bequeath 20% of my residuary
estate, whether real or personal property
and wherever located to The Cascade Pacific
Council, Boy Scouts of America.”
Why Write a Will?
Whether you are married, single, widowed,
or divorced, you need a will.
In many cases, it has nothing to do with how
large or small your estate may be. Without
a will, your estate will not be distributed to
those family members and organizations that
you care about. The State will decide who
gets your assets, and probably keep a sizable
chunk of it for itself. Without a will, the
State can also decide who takes care of your
young children when you are gone.
Without a will, your family and friends
will suffer, but so will your church, your schools,
and Scouting. Your bequest gift can make
a real difference in the financial future of
our council and the other organizations that
are important to you and your family. Call
us and ask for more information on the importance
of a will and what it can mean to
you.
You spent a lifetime building your estate.
Now it’s time to take a few minutes to
protect that estate. For a FREE Wills kit, contact
was honored
by the
Cascade Pacific
Council on Friday,
September
26 at the Salem
Conference Center
in front of hundreds
of his closest
friends. Mr.
Frank has long
been an Oregon
champion. Born into a legendary Oregon
retail family, he worked in the family Meier
& Frank store, later becoming a trusted confidant
and chief of staff to Senator Mark Hatfield.
Gerry managed to continue his varied
interests outside of politics all through the
26 years he served with the Senator. Gerry
has served the Boy Scouts of America since
1955 at the local, state and national levels
and is a Silver Beaver recipient. Beyond
Scouting, Gerry’s influence on Oregon good
works, through his own philanthropic contributions
and managing innumerable projects,
is remarkable. Gerry was named Oregon’s
first and only Premier Citizen by gubernatorial
proclamation in 2000.
The event was a significant fundraiser
for local council operations and a grand
celebration of Scouting in and around the
Salem area.
