Appendix 32: Recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

excellence<br />

In <strong>2005</strong>, government schools <strong>and</strong> TAFE <strong>NSW</strong><br />

Institutes, students <strong>and</strong> staff were acknowledged at<br />

the national, State <strong>and</strong> local levels for their excellence<br />

in, <strong>and</strong> commitment to, teaching <strong>and</strong> learning in public<br />

education <strong>and</strong> training.<br />

The Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student<br />

Achievement recognises excellence in academic,<br />

sporting <strong>and</strong> cultural achievements as well as<br />

leadership <strong>and</strong> contribution to the school community.<br />

In <strong>2005</strong>, 38 Year 12 students enrolled in government<br />

schools gained this award.<br />

The Director-General’s School Achievement Award<br />

is open to all public schools <strong>and</strong> recognises significant<br />

contributions to public education or the <strong>Department</strong>’s<br />

priorities. In <strong>2005</strong>, 28 schools received awards.<br />

The <strong>2005</strong> Australian TAFE Marketing Association<br />

Awards for Marketing Excellence include eleven<br />

categories that focus on the diverse <strong>and</strong> innovative<br />

strategies <strong>and</strong> products that are used to promote TAFE<br />

within Australia <strong>and</strong> overseas. Award winners include<br />

the TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> - Sydney Institute, <strong>2005</strong> Institute<br />

Awards Presentation Celebrating Excellence - Special<br />

Event over $10,000, TAFE PLUS, Br<strong>and</strong> Repositioning<br />

- Marketing Campaign over $50,000 <strong>and</strong> TAFE <strong>NSW</strong>,<br />

Ensuring Responsible Service at Wine Australia 2004<br />

- Business Development - Strategic Partnership <strong>and</strong>/or<br />

Innovation.<br />

The Australian Teachers <strong>of</strong> Media (ATOM) Awards<br />

recognise the achievements <strong>of</strong> Australian <strong>and</strong> New<br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, educators <strong>and</strong> students for the<br />

production <strong>of</strong> innovative multimedia learning materials.<br />

In <strong>2005</strong>, the Centre for Learning Innovation received<br />

the award for best primary education resource.<br />

Twenty five current or former employees <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department were awarded within the Order <strong>of</strong><br />

Australia in <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

The Public Service Medal was awarded to John<br />

Allsop, Director, TAFE <strong>NSW</strong>, South Western Sydney<br />

Institute; Julie Buckley, Primary Industries <strong>and</strong> Natural<br />

Resources Curriculum Centre, TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> – Western<br />

Institute; <strong>and</strong> Sue Reid, TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> - Hunter Institute;<br />

Sara Thorley-Smith, Safety <strong>and</strong> Security Directorate.<br />

The Baxter <strong>2005</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> Health Awards, <strong>Education</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Award, was presented to the TAFE <strong>NSW</strong><br />

- New Engl<strong>and</strong> Institute <strong>and</strong> the Hunter New Engl<strong>and</strong><br />

Area Health Service. These awards are recognised as<br />

the most prestigious health awards in Australia.<br />

The Belle Young Interior Designer <strong>of</strong> the Year<br />

Award is the design industry’s most celebrated award.<br />

In <strong>2005</strong> TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> students won both first <strong>and</strong><br />

second prizes.<br />

The Cohesive Community School Award is<br />

presented to a school or group <strong>of</strong> schools that have<br />

made a significant difference by promoting social<br />

harmony <strong>and</strong> unity. Wiley Park Public School was<br />

the recipient <strong>of</strong> the <strong>2005</strong> award. Seven schools<br />

from the public education sector received special<br />

commendations.<br />

The Excellence in the Integration <strong>of</strong> Information<br />

<strong>and</strong> Communication Technologies (ICT) Award<br />

recognises teachers at the forefront <strong>of</strong> incorporating<br />

ICT in teaching <strong>and</strong> learning. In <strong>2005</strong>, seven teachers<br />

received the award. For the first time the award<br />

program also included the Australian Information<br />

Industry Association (AIIA) Teacher Support Program.<br />

The Excellent Service to Public <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Training</strong> Award honours people who make significant<br />

contributions to public education <strong>and</strong> training. In<br />
