<strong>and</strong> Safety<br />

Achievements<br />

• Design <strong>of</strong> a web based safety management system<br />

improving access to safety-related information <strong>and</strong><br />

resource materials to support managers in ensuring<br />

a safe workplace<br />

• Commencement <strong>of</strong> a training program to build<br />

capacity in the management <strong>of</strong> Occupational Health<br />

<strong>and</strong> Safety (OHS) issues in workplaces<br />

• Implementation <strong>of</strong> a new model for the<br />

management <strong>of</strong> workers’ compensation claims with<br />

the aim <strong>of</strong> reducing the premiums<br />

• Development <strong>of</strong> the Corporate Safety Strategy, Safe<br />

Working <strong>and</strong> Learning <strong>2005</strong>-2008, for achieving a<br />

safety culture <strong>and</strong> improved safety performance.<br />

This strategy has been recognised through a<br />

Treasury Managed Fund Risk Management Award.<br />

Strategies <strong>and</strong> programs<br />

• The Corporate Safety Strategy, Safe Working <strong>and</strong><br />

Learning <strong>2005</strong>-2008 focusing on OHS improvement<br />

as an outcome <strong>of</strong> the <strong>NSW</strong> Public Sector OHS <strong>and</strong><br />

Injury Management Improvement Initiative<br />

• A training <strong>and</strong> development program aimed at<br />

building the capacity <strong>of</strong> the workforce to effectively<br />

manage risks to health <strong>and</strong> safety has commenced<br />

• Improved risk management strategies <strong>and</strong> injury<br />

management programs<br />

• Improved claims <strong>and</strong> injury management programs<br />

to ensure effective management <strong>of</strong> workplace<br />

injuries<br />

• A risk management program supporting all areas<br />

to improve the management <strong>of</strong> risks to health<br />

<strong>and</strong> safety in the workplace, including a range <strong>of</strong><br />

policies, guidelines <strong>and</strong> support materials<br />

• A program to enhance the health <strong>and</strong> wellbeing <strong>of</strong><br />

employees<br />

• Internal management systems to inform risk<br />

management programs <strong>and</strong> effectively monitor<br />

safety performance.<br />

Challenges <strong>and</strong> future directions<br />

Key challenges for the <strong>Department</strong> in 2006 are:<br />

• To improve the overall safety performance<br />

by fostering a safety culture throughout the<br />

<strong>Department</strong><br />

• To communicate effectively with employees <strong>and</strong><br />

workplaces <strong>and</strong> engage all staff in programs,<br />

systems <strong>and</strong> procedures to improve safety<br />

outcomes <strong>and</strong> thereby improve educational<br />

outcomes<br />

• To continue to strive for a best practice<br />

management system to reduce the human <strong>and</strong><br />

financial cost <strong>of</strong> workplace injuries.<br />
