<strong>2005</strong>, 47 people were recognised for their outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

commitment.<br />

The Jim Anderson Scholarships support five Year<br />

12 students enrolled at one <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> government<br />

secondary schools in Western Sydney who take up<br />

study at the University <strong>of</strong> Western Sydney or a TAFE<br />

<strong>NSW</strong> Institute.<br />

Leadership Fellowships are awarded to public<br />

school principals to support their pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning.<br />

In <strong>2005</strong>, nine principals were awarded fellowships to<br />

conduct research nationally <strong>and</strong>/or overseas.<br />

The Meritorious Service to Public <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Training</strong> Award celebrating outst<strong>and</strong>ing achievement<br />

<strong>and</strong> contributions to public education <strong>and</strong> training was<br />

awarded to the author Libby Gleeson.<br />

The <strong>NSW</strong> Combined High Schools’ Sports<br />

Association awarded:<br />

• The Val Lambert Trophy to Johnno Cotterill, Sydney<br />

Distance <strong>Education</strong>, for outst<strong>and</strong>ing achievement by<br />

a male student in his chosen sport <strong>of</strong> water polo<br />

• The Betty Bowen Award, to Dani Samuels, for<br />

outst<strong>and</strong>ing achievement by a female student, in<br />

her chosen sport <strong>of</strong> athletics.<br />

The 38th WorldSkills Competition TAFE <strong>NSW</strong><br />

students made up 14 <strong>of</strong> the 25 Australian competitors<br />

at Competition held in Helsinki during May <strong>2005</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

were awarded three gold medals, two bronze medals,<br />

<strong>and</strong> five medallions <strong>of</strong> excellence.<br />

Premier’s Teacher Scholarships were awarded<br />

to 38 teachers to undertake international study in<br />

six <strong>of</strong> the key learning areas; Aboriginal education;<br />

environmental education; special education; rural <strong>and</strong><br />

remote education; business studies; <strong>and</strong> information<br />

<strong>and</strong> communication technologies.<br />

Public <strong>Education</strong> Service Certificates are awarded<br />

to teachers <strong>and</strong> departmental <strong>of</strong>ficers in recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

20, 30 or 40 years <strong>of</strong> service to government schools.<br />

Public School Parent <strong>of</strong> the Year Awards recognise<br />

parents who have made a significant contribution to<br />

their school communities. In <strong>2005</strong>, 56 parents were<br />

recognised by their Regions.<br />

Quality Teaching Awards are managed jointly by the<br />

Australian College <strong>of</strong> Educators (<strong>NSW</strong> Branch) <strong>and</strong><br />

the <strong>Department</strong> on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Minister for <strong>Education</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Training</strong>. In <strong>2005</strong>, 12 teachers from government<br />

schools <strong>and</strong> 12 teachers from TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Institutes<br />

received recognition for their exemplary practice.<br />

The School <strong>and</strong> TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Administrative <strong>and</strong><br />

Support Staff Recognition Awards affirm the<br />

valuable contribution that administrative <strong>and</strong> support<br />

staff make to public education. In <strong>2005</strong>, eight school<br />

administrative <strong>and</strong> support staff <strong>and</strong> two members <strong>of</strong><br />

TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> administrative services received awards.<br />

The School Web Design Awards encourage<br />

teachers <strong>and</strong> students to become familiar with<br />

web design tools <strong>and</strong> to use information <strong>and</strong><br />

communication technologies to create thematic<br />

websites. In <strong>2005</strong>, seven secondary schools <strong>and</strong><br />

seven primary schools received awards.<br />

The Special Industry Awards recognise outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

achievements in the workplace <strong>and</strong> in training. In<br />

<strong>2005</strong>, the Phil Darby Memorial Award was awarded<br />

to Kevin Spiteri in the South Western Sydney Region.<br />

The award for the Top Apprentice in Vehicle Trades<br />

was awarded to David McAlister in the North Coast<br />

Region, <strong>and</strong> the Excellence in Trade Skills Award was<br />

awarded to Daniel Lukic in the South Sydney Region.<br />

TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Quality Awards are made to teams<br />

<strong>of</strong> teaching <strong>and</strong> non-teaching staff from TAFE<br />

<strong>NSW</strong>. These awards recognise team projects that<br />

demonstrate significant improvement to, <strong>and</strong> support<br />

for, the quality <strong>of</strong> teaching <strong>and</strong> learning in TAFE <strong>NSW</strong>.<br />

In <strong>2005</strong>, the Gold Award was awarded to Sydney<br />

Institute; the Silver Award was awarded jointly to<br />

Vocational <strong>Education</strong> in Schools Directorate <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Community Services, Health, Tourism <strong>and</strong> Recreation<br />

Curriculum Centre; <strong>and</strong> the Bronze Award was<br />

awarded to Western Institute.<br />

The Teacher <strong>and</strong> School Administrative <strong>and</strong><br />

Support Staff Exchange Program supported 31<br />

teachers <strong>and</strong> two principals to undertake year-long<br />

exchanges in 10 destinations. These exchanges<br />

provide valuable insights into other educational<br />

organisations as well as bringing international<br />

perspectives to <strong>NSW</strong> schools.<br />

The Treasury Managed Fund Risk Management<br />

Awards celebrate the achievements <strong>of</strong> government<br />

agencies in the Treasury Managed Fund in better<br />

practice risk management. In <strong>2005</strong>, the <strong>Department</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Training</strong> won a highly commended<br />

award for its Safe Working <strong>and</strong> Learning Strategy<br />

<strong>2005</strong>-2008.<br />

Vocational <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Training</strong> (VET) sector<br />

awards recognise <strong>and</strong> reward the achievements<br />

<strong>of</strong> students, teachers, businesses <strong>and</strong> vocational<br />

education <strong>and</strong> training providers in the VET sector.<br />

In <strong>2005</strong>, the people <strong>and</strong> groups that received awards<br />

included:<br />

• Aboriginal <strong>and</strong> Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>er (ATSI)<br />

Student <strong>of</strong> the Year Award - George Williams,<br />

New Engl<strong>and</strong> Institute<br />

• Apprentice <strong>of</strong> the Year Award - Steven Anderson,<br />

Illawarra Institute<br />

• Minister’s Award for a VET in Schools Teacher<br />

- Lynne Kilpatrick, Southern Sydney Region<br />

• Trainee <strong>of</strong> the Year Award - Scott Greenow,<br />

Northern Sydney Institute<br />

• Vocational School Student <strong>of</strong> the Year Award<br />

- Kiera Dodds, Hunter Region<br />

• Vocational Student <strong>of</strong> the Year Award - Sarah<br />

Talbot, Hunter Institute<br />

• Large <strong>Training</strong> Provider <strong>of</strong> the Year Award -<br />

TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> North Coast Institute<br />

• VET in Schools Excellence Award - Northern<br />

Beaches Secondary College.<br />
