Cont<strong>in</strong>uously improv<strong>in</strong>g and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
positive relationships <strong>with</strong> our<br />
stakeholders is one of our pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />
priorities and challenges. We believe<br />
that establish<strong>in</strong>g relationships built on<br />
trust is fundamental to our ability to<br />
create value, but recognise that many<br />
stakeholders currently have low levels<br />
of trust <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess generally.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> table opposite we identify our<br />
ma<strong>in</strong> stakeholder groups, outl<strong>in</strong>e our<br />
approach to listen<strong>in</strong>g to and engag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
each of <strong>the</strong>se groups, and describe<br />
<strong>the</strong> channels of engagement and <strong>the</strong><br />
pr<strong>in</strong>cipal issues raised. We also briefly<br />
review our response to <strong>the</strong>se issues.<br />
In addition to <strong>the</strong>se various channels<br />
of engagement, we ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a<br />
web-based, Group-wide compla<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
and grievance procedure to record<br />
and respond to stakeholder feedback,<br />
provid<strong>in</strong>g remedy where appropriate.<br />
We also conduct regular reviews<br />
of media coverage of <strong>the</strong> key<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ability issues fac<strong>in</strong>g our<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>in</strong>dustry sector and<br />
stakeholders.<br />
While <strong>the</strong> specific <strong>in</strong>terests and<br />
concerns of our stakeholders typically<br />
vary by stakeholder group and region,<br />
our dialogue processes dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year<br />
highlighted several priority concerns<br />
across most stakeholder groups.<br />

The nature of <strong>the</strong> relationship<br />
between m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g companies,<br />
government and labour organisations<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> labour<br />
disputes and related unrest<br />

Concerns regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> plat<strong>in</strong>um<br />
m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry, our exposure to this<br />
sector, and our approach to<br />

<strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> brought senior<br />
leaders from more than 50 of<br />
its significant <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />
contract<strong>in</strong>g companies toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
<strong>in</strong> November to discuss <strong>the</strong><br />
safety, health and well-be<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
contractors work<strong>in</strong>g on our sites.<br />
The summit, hosted by chief<br />
executive Cynthia Carroll <strong>in</strong><br />
Johannesburg, was a chance to<br />
discuss our new requirements<br />
for contract<strong>in</strong>g companies to<br />
provide a basic healthcare<br />
package for long-term contractors<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g on our sites. This will<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude diagnosis, counsell<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
care, support and treatment for<br />
HIV <strong>in</strong>fection and tuberculosis,<br />
and will be subsidised by<br />
<strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> and delivered<br />
through our extensive network<br />
of healthcare facilities.<br />
The CEOs spent time discuss<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> requirements and identify<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ways to implement <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
“Look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> feedback, I<br />
believe we met one of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />
objectives to engage and <strong>in</strong>spire<br />
people to do th<strong>in</strong>gs differently,”<br />
says L<strong>in</strong>da Wedderburn,<br />
<strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong>’s global lead for<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able, responsible supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>. “Everyone has a clear<br />
understand<strong>in</strong>g of what is expected<br />
and toge<strong>the</strong>r we have explored<br />
<strong>the</strong> best way to move forward”.<br />
