Dur<strong>in</strong>g 2011, we concentrated on<br />

embedd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong><br />

People Development Way, a global<br />

capability framework detail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

behaviours, knowledge, skills and<br />

experience required to achieve our<br />

strategic objectives. In 2012, we<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued this process by <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

career-path tools to guide employees’<br />

career development decisions. In<br />

addition, employees are provided <strong>with</strong><br />

a work<strong>in</strong>g knowledge of key bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

challenges through articles tailored to<br />

our leadership behaviours. A resource<br />

library of content from lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

management th<strong>in</strong>kers is also available.<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g on current best practice<br />

across <strong>the</strong> Group, we also cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

<strong>the</strong> development of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

programmes targeted at first-l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

managers to improve operational<br />

and people management capabilities.<br />

The programmes will be rolled out<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g 2013.<br />

The Adult Basic Education and<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (ABET) programme is run<br />

by our bus<strong>in</strong>esses and <strong>the</strong> corporate<br />

centre office <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> and<br />

provides general education to adults<br />

who have not all had access to formal<br />

school<strong>in</strong>g. In 2012, 1,239 employees,<br />

contractors and community members<br />

enrolled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme. In addition,<br />

2,638 employees and community<br />

members were provided <strong>with</strong> portable<br />

skills tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. This puts emphasis on<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong> skills not needed<br />

traditionally <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company, so<br />

that such people are employable after<br />

m<strong>in</strong>e closure.<br />

Recognis<strong>in</strong>g and reward<strong>in</strong>g<br />

performance<br />

Manag<strong>in</strong>g our people’s performance<br />

plays a key role <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

guid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir development and<br />

behaviour. In 2012, we cont<strong>in</strong>ued to<br />

roll out our Group-wide performancemanagement<br />

process and system,<br />

which aligns <strong>in</strong>dividual objectives<br />

<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> company’s strategy while<br />

re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g our values. L<strong>in</strong>e managers<br />

review all performance assessments<br />

and calibration sessions are held<br />

to ensure that rat<strong>in</strong>gs are applied<br />

consistently across <strong>the</strong> Group. Our<br />

management and professional<br />

employees have regular performance<br />

and career development reviews <strong>with</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir managers. For o<strong>the</strong>r employees,<br />

performance management is largely<br />

team-based.<br />
