Our key people risks relate to<br />

workforce management, workplace<br />

safety, and occupational health and<br />

wellness. Core components of<br />

address<strong>in</strong>g workforce management<br />

risks <strong>in</strong>clude attract<strong>in</strong>g, develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> skills necessary to<br />

meet our bus<strong>in</strong>ess objectives and<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g positive relations <strong>with</strong><br />

all of our stakeholders, particularly<br />

our employees and trade unions.<br />

Workplace safety, occupational health,<br />

and employee wellness (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

management of diseases such as<br />

HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis <strong>in</strong> our<br />

workforce and communities) are<br />

Our HR standards, management<br />

systems and processes are <strong>the</strong><br />

foundations that underp<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se areas.<br />

The <strong>Anglo</strong> <strong>American</strong> Occupational<br />

Health and Safety Ways, which are<br />

supported by technical standards and<br />

guidance documents, mandate our<br />

approach to workplace health and<br />

safety management.<br />

Our <strong>in</strong>ternal S&SD risk and assurance<br />

function conducts ‘second party’<br />

reviews of our most material<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability and technical risks on a<br />

rotational basis and regularly assesses<br />

operational compliance <strong>with</strong> health<br />

and safety standards. We also<br />

seek external certification on our<br />

occupational health and safety<br />

management systems. All operations<br />

are expected to atta<strong>in</strong> and reta<strong>in</strong><br />

OHSAS 18001 certification <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> two<br />

years of commission<strong>in</strong>g or acquisition.<br />

At December 2012, 95% of our<br />

sites had achieved certification.<br />

The exceptions were Plat<strong>in</strong>um’s<br />

Twickenham m<strong>in</strong>e and Amandelbult<br />

concentrator, which are expected to<br />

achieve certification <strong>in</strong> 2013, and<br />

Thermal Coal’s Zibulo colliery, which<br />

recently completed an audit and will<br />

be certified <strong>in</strong> 2013.<br />

Education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

We offer extensive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to support<br />

employees <strong>with</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g health<br />

and safety standards. We also have<br />

formal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and development<br />

programmes at both bus<strong>in</strong>ess unit and<br />

Group levels to support our people to<br />

progress <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir role and career.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>cluded tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> People<br />

Development Way, our global<br />

capability framework detail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

behaviours, knowledge, skills and<br />

experience that are required of our<br />

employees, for use to achieve our<br />

strategic objectives.<br />

Health and safety related tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

extends to all employees <strong>in</strong> various<br />

forms, from formal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />

through to regular, if not daily, health<br />

and safety brief<strong>in</strong>gs. Our awardw<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

SHE risk management<br />

programme, which was launched <strong>in</strong><br />

2007, offers tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on effective<br />

operational risk management. In total,<br />

776 employees participated <strong>in</strong> 40 of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se programmes <strong>in</strong> 2012, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> total to more than 7,400 to date.<br />
