WHEREAS: Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was<br />
<strong>the</strong> first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree.<br />
Working in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> Psychiatry, Education and<br />
Anthropology, her greatest contribution was in<br />
revolutionizing <strong>the</strong> way one views how children<br />
learn. Through <strong>the</strong> Montessori program or method,<br />
allowing <strong>the</strong> child to work independently and with<br />
peers, ra<strong>the</strong>r than being traditionally taught solely<br />
by <strong>the</strong> teacher, she developed each child’s maximum<br />
potential. Today, hundreds <strong>of</strong> schools worldwide use<br />
<strong>the</strong> Montessori method with great success; and<br />
WHEREAS: We commend <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
IHCC-NY, Inc. <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir longstanding commitment<br />
and contributions to <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> Italian-American<br />
Heritage Month. Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir dedicated ef<strong>for</strong>ts,<br />
all Americans have a greater appreciation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Italians and Italian-Americans who have made New<br />
York City such an extraordinary place to live; now,<br />
<strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e<br />
BE IT KNOWN: That <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong><br />
New York most gratefully recognizes <strong>the</strong><br />
Italian Heritage &Culture Committee<br />
<strong>of</strong> New York, Inc.<br />
<strong>for</strong> its outstanding service and contributions to <strong>the</strong><br />
community.<br />
