Whereas: Staten Island is home to more<br />
Italian-Americans than any o<strong>the</strong>r county in <strong>the</strong><br />
United States <strong>of</strong> America, and enjoys a sister-city<br />
relationship with <strong>the</strong> Tuscan city <strong>of</strong> Crespina, Italy;<br />
and<br />
Whereas: To celebrate <strong>the</strong> myriad contributions<br />
Italian-Americans have made to <strong>the</strong> social,<br />
cultural, and economic well-being <strong>of</strong> our City,<br />
State, and Nation, <strong>the</strong> Borough President’s Office<br />
created Staten Island’s Columbus Day Parade<br />
in 1991, which has become a favorite October<br />
tradition down New Dorp Lane <strong>for</strong> all those who<br />
are Italian-American, or just Italian at heart; and<br />
Whereas: The Italian Heritage and Culture<br />
Committee <strong>of</strong> New York, Inc., celebrates its 34 th<br />
annual Italian Heritage and Culture Month<br />
this October with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me: “A Tribute to Dr.<br />
Maria Montessori: An Internationally Renowned<br />
Educator and Physician”; and<br />
Whereas: Staten Islanders <strong>of</strong> all ethnic<br />
backgrounds applaud Italian-American New<br />
Yorkers <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir commitment to sharing <strong>the</strong><br />
wonders <strong>of</strong> Italian culture with us, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir status<br />
as model citizens, and <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir remarkable record<br />
<strong>of</strong> service to our City,<br />
