Voluntary standards<br />
� The Climate Registry, 2007 is a non-profit<br />
collaboration among North American states,<br />
provinces, territories and Native Sovereign<br />
Nations that sets consistent and transparent<br />
standards to calculate, verify and publicly report<br />
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into a single<br />
registry. The Registry supports both voluntary and<br />
mandatory reporting programmes and provides<br />
comprehensive, accurate data to reduce GHG<br />

� The Western Climate <strong>Initiative</strong> (WCI), 2007. The<br />
WCI is a North American initiative made up of US<br />
states, Canadian provinces, Mexican states, and<br />
tribes who work collaboratively to combat climate<br />
change. WCI partners are currently developing<br />
a joint strategy to reduce regional greenhouse<br />
gas emissions in order to achieve the regional<br />
reduction goal of 15% below 2005 emissions<br />
by 2020. As part of this strategy, the WCI have<br />
developed a cap-and-trade programme that will<br />
begin in January 2012. On 15 July 2009 the<br />
WCI issued the final version of the first group of<br />
Essential Requirements for Mandatory <strong>Reporting</strong><br />

Mandatory standards<br />
� Corporations Act, 2001 requires companies<br />
that prepare a director’s report to provide<br />
details of the entity’s performance in relation to<br />
environmental regulations. On 1 July 2004 the<br />
Corporate Law Economic Reform Program (Audit<br />
Reform & Corporate Disclosure) Bill 2003 (CLERP<br />
9), extended this to the operations and financial<br />
position of the entity and its business strategies<br />
and prospects (Section 99A [1]). In 2005 both the<br />
parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations<br />
and Financial Services (PJC) and Corporations and<br />
Markets Advisory Committee (CAMAC) undertook
